“If you didn’t like me at all, why would you let a debt of gratitude force you into agreeing to be with me?”

She knew Chris better than that. He wasn’t the kind of man who allowed himself to be controlled by anyone. Even if he owed someone his life, he would never let that person threaten him into anything.

That was why, later, when that old woman from the Xander family pressured him to marry Winter, Skyla had already guessed his answer before he even gave it.

“I agreed to be with you, but of course it wasn’t because of her.”

His deep voice was cold and merciless.

“You just happened to be a convenient tool.

Skyla stared at Chris’s broad back, her face going pale. In disbelief, she asked, “A tool?”

“What do you mean?” Her reddened eyes widened as she pressed him for an answer.

She didn’t believe it. She refused to believe it.

“I was your only girlfriend. I was the first woman you ever acknowledged in your life!”

Chris put out his cigarette, his expression unreadable.

“Long before you, she had already dumped me once.”

In his mind, Winter’s words from back then surfaced again.

“Every minute and every second of the past makes me regret ever knowing you.”

Chris strode up the stairs. “And you? You were never anything at all.”

Skyla’s gaze went rigid.

“That’s impossible! Before then, she had never even confessed to you. How could she have dumped you?”

“She did confess.”

An image from a long time ago flashed through his mind.

Her confession had been passionate and pure, like a fire that burned through his calm and reason, making him willing to abandon everything and sink with her.

“You’re lying to me. You’re lying!”

But the only answer she received was the sound of the basement door closing.

Once Gavin entered, his men stood guard outside the door. No one from the Jasper family was allowed within a step of the room.

Victor sat downstairs. He sent people to ask around, but they couldn’t get a single word out of Gavin’s men about what Skyla had asked them to retrieve.

Following Skyla’s instructions, Gavin found the switch in the corner of the closet. When he pressed it, a small safe built into the wall was revealed.

The password was Chris’s birthday.

The fact that Skyla had used Chris’s birthday as the password made even Gavin, who usually showed no emotion, look faintly uncomfortable.

Gavin entered the numbers.

Suddenly, a cold feeling seemed to seep out from the safe.

“Careful!”

Gavin warned them at once. But even with his quick reaction and his men’s elite training, several poisoned darts shot out from inside, and one still struck a bodyguard on the back of the hand.

The skin around the wound began turning black at a visible speed.
