Chapter 294
“Steve…” Her brows drew together as she tried to explain. “That’s not what I meant.”
“You’ve made your meaning very clear.” Steve’s face was expressionless. “I still have a lot of work to deal with. You should go.”
Sasha looked at him, as if she wanted to say more, but in the end, she only picked up her bag and turned to leave.
Then she stopped.
“If I find out that you…” She seemed to think better of it, took a slow breath, and said, “You’d better not have done anything you can’t undo.”
Watching Sasha leave, Steve’s eyes darkened. She was clearly hiding something from him.
But at this point, he no longer cared.
He withdrew his gaze, and it landed on the framed photo of Winter sitting on his desk.
He reached for it and drew it closer, his fingertips brushing over Winter’s face in the picture with unsettling tenderness.
“Now that Chris is finished, you’ll finally have no choice but to see me, won’t you?”
Holding the frame in one hand, he pulled out his phone with the other and made a call.
The line rang.
Then the automated message came on.
“The person you are trying to reach is on another line.”
After several tries, Steve realized Winter had blocked him.
At that moment, Winter was at the hospital with William while he had his wound redressed. He was inside the room, and she was waiting outside.
Her phone rang.
It was an unfamiliar number.
She hesitated for a few seconds before answering. “Hello?”
“Winnie, it’s me.” Steve’s voice came from the other end.
Winter frowned. “Why are you calling me?”
“Have dinner with me tonight.”
“I’m busy.” She turned him down without hesitation.
Steve kept his tone mild. “I was wrong last time. I shouldn’t have said those things. I’m apologizing. And don’t tell me you’re busy. I know you’ve already left the station.”
Winter wasn’t even a little surprised that Steve had been keeping tabs on her. That was exactly the kind of thing
had forced on her.
“But it really hurts,” she said softly. “You can feel for yourself…”
She started to press herself against him, naked and cautious.
Steve kicked her away.
“Get out!”
The woman went pale with fear. She scrambled up from the floor and stumbled out of the room.
At last, the room fell silent.
Steve leaned back against the sofa and turned on his phone. The screen lit up, revealing the photo of Winter on his lock screen.
He let out a low laugh.
“Winnie, they’re just practice. You’re the only woman I’ve ever truly wanted. You think you’re too good for me? If I can’t have your heart yet, I’ll make sure your body belongs to me completely!”
