Chapter 293
Steve took the slap full force. A red handprint immediately bloomed across his pale cheek.
He clutched his face and stared at his mother in disbelief. In a hard, furious voice, he demanded, “What was that for?”
For a split second, something violent and vicious flashed through his eyes.
Seeing that ruthless side of him, Sasha froze. Then her voice dropped. “I should be asking you that.”
She was just about to let her anger loose when the secretary knocked and came in with coffee.
Sasha lowered the hand she had raised and folded both arms across her chest instead. Suppressing her fury, she turned slightly and looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The atmosphere in the office was clearly off. The secretary didn’t dare look around. She set the coffee down and left at once.
The office door closed again.
Steve tugged at his tie, then turned and strode behind the desk.
He dropped into the executive chair, leaned back, and looked at her with cold detachment.
“I’m in charge of the corporation now, but you’re still my mom. I won’t hold that slap against you for the moment. But you need to tell me why you did it.”
“And how exactly did you become the one in charge? Why don’t you explain that to me?”
Sasha crossed the office in her heels and stopped in front of him. She set her handbag on the desk and looked at him across it, her expression stern.
Steve pulled a cigarette from the pack and said evenly, “Chris was brought down. The corporation couldn’t go without a leader, so everyone chose me to step in.”
“And why was Chris brought down?” Sasha shot back, her tone sharp and relentless.
Steve let out a cold, mocking laugh. “Isn’t that all over the news?”
He reached for the lighter.
Suddenly, Sasha lunged forward, snatched the cigarette from his fingers, and threw it into the trash.
“Steve!”
Fragments of the past flashed through Sasha’s mind. A chill seemed to creep out from her bones.
She strode around the desk and stopped beside him. She put a hand on his shoulder, then bent down and looked straight into his eyes.
“Steve. Tell me the truth.”
Steve glanced at the hand on his shoulder. Her fingertips were trembling slightly. Then he lifted his eyes to her face, his gaze unreadable.
“You’re scared?”
“No.” Sasha denied it at once.
“I’m just worried you took the wrong path to get this position.”
Steve looked away, his expression turning cold. “Why is it that when Chris sits in that seat, everyone says he deserves it, but if I do, it must mean I played dirty?”
