It all happened in a tenth of a second. No one had time to react.
Even Winter only realized what had happened a moment later, when she looked at the blood welling from the web of her hand. Her whole arm had gone stiff and numb.
She couldn’t feel any pain. All she could see was the bright red blood.
Drop by drop, it fell into the cracks between the stone tiles in the yard and seeped into the dirt.
It was still daytime, but the sky somehow looked even darker than before. A wide shadow from the roof fell across Winter, and a deep, bone–chilling cold spread through her.
She turned to look at the man holding the gun, his expression cold, his lips pressed into a hard line. Then, little by little, a dull ache began to spread through her, but it wasn’t coming from her hand.
The man who had once fired a gun to save her from kidnappers had just fired at her.
All because she had tried to touch Skyla.
When he saw the tears rising in her eyes, Chris’s expression turned even colder. Furious, he flung the gun aside and strode toward her.
Hatred surged through Winter. She turned toward the gun that had been knocked away by the bullet and rushed for it without hesitation. But before she could grab it, a powerful force caught her from behind and locked her in place.
“Winter!” Chris barked.
She couldn’t reach the gun, and she couldn’t break free. So she lifted her foot and kicked the empty ceramic flowerpot under the porch straight at Skyla’s wheelchair.
Skyla’s wheelchair had already been stopped on the slope. The flowerpot slammed into it, and the wheels jerked forward. In the next second, the wheelchair tipped over the other side of the slope, throwing Skyla to the ground.
Her body hit the ground with a heavy thud. She cried out in pain. Her palm scraped across the rough gravel, tearing the skin and drawing beads of blood.
“Ms. Jasper!” the caregiver cried in panic.
William had lost so much blood. How could this tiny bit from Skyla ever be enough?
Winter struggled violently. She fought with everything she had, desperate to tear herself free from his grip, but Chris’s arms were like iron. She couldn’t shake him off. She couldn’t get loose.
“Let go of me!” She raised her right hand, her palm smeared with blood, and slapped Chris across the face with all her strength.
Under the dark, overcast sky, a streak of dark red, half dried blood stained his pale, handsome face, making him look even more cold and menacing.

But that one shot changed everything.
The second she saw him fire at her, every last bit of confusion was gone.
Whatever cracks had formed were sealed shut in an instant. The wall around her heart stood solid again, stronger
than before.
There was nothing left to question.
“Why am I even saying this?” she said with a bitter laugh, her eyes burning red. “Even if Skyla Jasper killed me, you still won’t do a thing to her.”
Chris looked at her with his dark eyes, something cold and complicated twisting through his expression.
