Winter’s vision kept blurring. In a daze, she sank into a chair. A sharp ringing filled her ears, and her head started
to spin.
It was Skyla.
Why would she have someone kill Mrs. Young?
And if Sean’s people were able to get that answer out of her, there was no way Chris couldn’t have done the same. He had even questioned her himself. That meant he had been suspicious before Sean ever was. Maybe he had figured it out a long time ago.
And yet he still let that woman get taken into custody.
He was protecting Skyla.
If William hadn’t stepped in and taken that knife for her yesterday, then the person in the ER right now, the one needing emergency treatment all over again, would have been her. She might already be dead.
Winter’s eyes turned red. She let out a cold, shaky laugh. Her whole body trembled, and tears fell silently to the floor.
The doors to the emergency room opened.
Winter quickly wiped her tears away and hurried over. William was slowly coming back to consciousness, but his face was terrifyingly pale. Even now, he was still forcing a smile, trying to show her he was okay.
But he was too weak. He couldn’t even speak.
This was William Zeller. The wild, carefree young heir of the Zeller family in Liono City. The shining star everyone
adored.
A sharp pain clenched in Winter’s chest, so intense it nearly made her black out.
“It’s okay, William. You’re okay now.” She gently stroked his hair, tears trembling in her eyes.
Under her breath, she whispered, “I’ll make Skyla Jasper pay for this. Every drop of blood you lost because of her, I’ll make her pay back.”
William’s hospital bed was rolled into the elevator. Medical staff stood on either side, with Sean beside him. William’s lips moved slightly, as if he were trying to say something, so Sean bent down and pressed his ear close
to his mouth.
As the elevator doors slowly closed, Winter didn’t follow them in. Instead, she turned and stepped into the elevator across the hall, heading downstairs.
The weather was just like yesterday. Gray, overcast, and bitterly cold.

At the villa in Westbury, Skyla was eating breakfast. The caregiver draped a cashmere blanket over her legs. “Ms. Jasper, it got colder today. You should stay warm.”
“I’ll make arrangements ahead of time. Once the New Year holidays are over, I’ll have someone take it down. I think it blocks too much light anyway,” the caregiver said.
Skyla gave a small smile in approval.
The caregiver hesitated for a moment. “Should I mention it to Mr. Xander first?”
She had picked up on the fact that Skyla was the one living here now, but the house was still in Chris’s name.
Skyla’s hand tightened slightly around her spoon. “There’s no need to ask him about something this minor.”
Even if she really did cut the tree down, what would Chris say?
Before she came back to the country, she had told him she liked the area and wanted to live in this house. And he
had let her move in.
The caregiver nodded awkwardly. “Of course.”
After a moment, Skyla set down her spoon, picked up her napkin, and wiped the corner of her mouth. In a flat voice, she said, “I’m not hungry anymore.”
