Game Over, Mr. CEO: Your Wife Is Done (Winter and Chris) novel Chapter 250

Speaking of that, the caregiver walked over to Skyla and said, “Didn’t you see the news today? The police were right there working the case, and that lunatic still stabbed someone in broad daylight. People these days are getting more and more unhinged. They’re not even scared of the police anymore.”

She had no idea what had been putting Skyla in such a bad mood lately. She was terrified of saying the wrong thing and getting one of those cold, venomous looks again.

Just thinking about it had given her nightmares for days.

She knew she had already upset Skyla before, and she was constantly worried about losing her job. The pay here was too good, and she had no intention of letting someone else walk off with a job like this. So every day, she kept trying different ways to cheer her up.

She studied Skyla’s expression carefully. When she saw no sign of displeasure, she let out a sincere sigh and said, “But really, what if someone with a grudge against the world decided to come in here looking for trouble? What would happen then? Mr. Xander really does care about you. He’s gone out of his way to make sure you’re protected.”

Skyla looked out at the dark night beyond the window, thoughtful. Then she smiled, clearly in a much better mood.

You’re right,” she said. “Chris still cares about me very much.”

Chris’s bodyguards were highly trained. After stepping out of the cars, they moved quietly, barely making a sound.

Skyla lay down on the bed. The caregiver turned off the light, stepped out, and closed the door behind her.

In the darkness, Skyla let out a quiet, knowing laugh.

So he had figured it out after all.

After leaving the police station yesterday, Chris had gone back to the Xander estate and stayed there until late that night. When he finally returned to Blackwood Manor, he went straight to the study and kept working until two in the morning.

But whether it was a workday, a weekend, or a holiday, he always woke up at the exact same time.

More than once, Dominic hadn’t been able to stop himself from asking, “Don’t you have a wife? What, she doesn’t wear you out? You get up this early every single day like you’ve got something to prove.‘

Chris had never once bothered answering him.

When he came downstairs, Mr. White was sitting on the sofa, leaning over the coffee table and writing something.

Hearing footsteps, he looked up and quickly stood. “Good morning, sir. You’re up.”

Mr. White followed beside him and pulled out a chair for him. He assumed Chris meant the paper on the coffee table.

“Ms. Scott called me early this morning,” he said. “She asked me for a few soup recipes. I’m slow at typing, so I just wrote them down instead. I was going to take a picture and send them to her.”

Just as he thought.

Chris’s grip tightened around his coffee cup. His whole face darkened.

He thought back to the years when she had taken care of him while he was blind. Back then, everything she cooked, every soup she made, had been pure guesswork. The kitchen at the Xander residence had been a disaster almost every day.

But now that she was making soup for William, she actually knew to ask someone for recipes.

Mr. White noticed Chris’s expression darken, though he couldn’t tell for sure whether he was imagining it.
