“The case is basically closed,” the officer said. “But it’s getting late, and there probably isn’t enough time tonight. Ms. Scott, we’ll need you to come down to the station tomorrow to do a follow–up report.”
Even so, Winter still felt a faint sense of unease.
“Can I see her?” she asked.
The officer shook his head. “She was transferred to the detention center before trial. Other than her attorney, no one is allowed to see her.”
Winter nodded to show she understood. At least the killer had been caught. There was no way she would escape the death penalty.
With that news, Winter went back to the hospital. William had already been moved to a VIP suite. Thinking he might be asleep, she quietly turned the handle and eased the door open.
The suite had a sitting room in front, with William’s hospital room farther inside.
As soon as she stepped in, she heard Sean’s assistant say in a low voice, “Chris Xander went to the police station. He stayed in the interrogation room for a while.”
Sean, who was sitting on the sofa, looked up just as he was about to speak. His calm, pale eyes landed on Winter.
Her hand tightened on the doorknob. “Sean.”
He gave a slight nod. “You’re back.”
William’s parents had split up when he was very young. His father had lived overseas for years to avoid Mr. Zeller Sr.’s constant lectures, so it was Sean, his older brother, who had practically raised him.
Sean was thirty–two. Serious, upright, and steady by nature, he was the kind of man everyone in Liono City respected.
To Winter, he had always felt almost like a father figure, someone she naturally looked up to.
She had always respected him. She nodded, walked in, and closed the door behind her.
Then she turned to the assistant. “You said Chris personally questioned that woman?”
The assistant hesitated and glanced at Sean.
Sean answered evenly, “It’s fine.”
Only then did the assistant nod. “Yes, Ms. Scott. But that’s all we know.”
In Liono City, the Zeller family wasn’t much weaker than the Xander family. If the Xanders could reach Somewhere, the Zellers could too.
But they didn’t know what Chris had said to that woman in the interrogation room.

But there was something she could not let go of either. Part of her wanted to stab that woman back. Still, the woman would eventually be sentenced to death.
Would a mother really kill someone out of resentment and leave her children behind without a second thought?
A sharp pain pierced Winter’s chest.
Hadn’t she been through something like that herself?
Her parents had loved her dearly. But in the end, crushed by debt, they had chosen to die together and leave her behind alone.
That night, Skyla was getting ready for bed when she heard several car engines in the courtyard.
“Go downstairs and see what’s going on,” she told the caregiver.
A little while later, the caregiver came back and said, “Ms. Jasper, Mr. Xander sent more bodyguards to protect you. He said things have been unsettled in Liono City lately.”
