“Why are you still lying in his arms? Come here. Once we get back to Liono City, if Ms. Jasper sees this, who knows how she’ll make things difficult for you.” William tapped Winter on the arm.
Winter pushed herself up from Chris’s chest.
One of her ears was still covered by Chris’s hand, and the other had been pressed against his chest. With the explosions still going off outside, she couldn’t hear what William was saying.
But every word William said landed clearly in Chris’s ears.
Just then, the commander’s voice came through the headset. “Mr. Xander, you go ahead and pull out first. We’ll stay back and cover you.”
Chris swept his gaze over the vast ocean. As the helicopter climbed higher, several ships docked on the far side of the island gradually came into view.
In a cool voice, Chris said, “No need to waste time with them. This is most likely Fabian’s way of stalling us. End it
fast.
“Protect this aircraft. You take the two ships on the left. The one on the far right is mine.”
The ship on the right was clearly the main force, and also the hardest one to take out with a sniper shot.
The commander on the helicopter had once served in the military with Chris. They had fought side by side before, and Chris was the best shot out of all of them.
So he answered without a second of hesitation. “Yes, sir.”
After saying that, Chris pressed a hand to the back of Winter’s head and pushed her down onto his lap. In a low voice, he said, “Stay down.”
The cabin door opened, and the screaming wind cut through like knives.
At a moment like this, Winter didn’t struggle or try to break free. She stayed where she was, obediently lying still.
Chris lifted the sniper rifle. His eyes, sharp as a hawk’s, locked onto the crosshairs in the scope. His grip on the trigger was steady and controlled as he slowly took up the pressure.
Then he fired.
The bullet tore through the air like lightning and struck the gun turret on the ship to the right on the far side of the island. It hit the gunner square in the forehead and killed him instantly.
Chris looked at her face from only inches away. The cold, razor sharp look that had stayed in his eyes when he fired slowly deepened into something unreadable.
Chris pulled Winter into the seat beside him, making her drop right onto that glaring bright yellow banner.
In a cool voice, he said, “It’s easier to get shot sitting across from me.
Before Winter could say anything, William gave her a skeptical look. “Just sit there. Pretend the person next to you doesn’t exist.”
He had rushed back to Liono City yesterday, and after spending the whole night worried sick about Winter, he hadn’t slept at all. Now that the danger had passed, William let out a yawn, but his eyes stayed fixed on Chris.
The look on his face made it seem like he wanted to burn a hole straight through him.
After nearly a full week of nonstop filming to stay on schedule, William was already exhausted.
He kept staring at Chris, but the longer he stared, the more he yawned. In less than ten minutes, he was asleep.
Right before drifting off, he muttered, “Don’t touch her.”
As Winter saw William’s head start to tip backward, she instinctively moved to catch him. But a pillow suddenly flew past her from beside her and landed perfectly behind William’s head, cushioning it as he leaned back.
