Chapter 210
“Sit still,” Chris said flatly.
Winter turned sideways, leaned back against the seat, and closed her eyes.
At first, just sitting that close to Chris had her nerves all tangled up.
Then her thoughts drifted to the overseas correspondent posting. She should be hearing back within the next couple of days.
If she had counted the dates right, it was already just a few days before New Year. Once the holiday was over, she would probably be leaving for Eveland.
Before that, though, she would definitely have to go back to the Xander estate and spend the holiday with Mrs. Xander Sr.
Chris sat there with his eyes closed, quietly resting. Before long, he heard the steady sound of breathing beside
him.
He opened his eyes and turned to look at Winter.
She had fallen asleep.
The helicopter landed on the roof of the Xander family hospital.
Chris felt Winter stir in his arms. He opened his eyes, watched her lashes flutter slightly, then helped her sit up
and ease back into her own seat.
Winter opened her eyes and took a second to realize they had landed.
She yawned, then glanced casually at Chris beside her, not sure whether he was asleep or just resting with his eyes closed. Then she got up and shook William.
“We’re back in Liono City, you lazy pig.”
William woke up with a start.
The medical team had already been waiting. The moment the helicopter touched down, they took Zac away for proper treatment.
Chris had just stepped off the helicopter when Gavin hurried over, his face tense.
“Mr. Xander, your phone couldn’t be reached. Mr. White called me instead. Mrs. Xander Sr. coughed up blood.”
Winter had just gotten off the helicopter too, and she heard every word.
The car sped all the way back to the Xander estate.
Winter rushed toward the room, but Mr. White stopped her at the door.
“Mr. White, why did Mrs. Xander Sr. suddenly cough up blood? Why wasn’t she taken to the hospital?”
Mr. White’s expression was grave. “Mrs. Xander Sr. asked that you stay outside.”
“Does she know too?” Tears slid from Mrs. Xander Sr.’s clouded eyes.
Chris’s jaw tightened.
Time seemed to drag on forever. ^
His voice dropped low and heavy. “She doesn’t know.”
It was as if she had no tears left. Mrs. Xander Sr.’s face turned gray with grief.
The child she had loved for so many years, the girl she had cared for as if she were truly part of the Xander family, was the daughter of the man who had killed her son and daughter–in–law.
Looking back on everything, Mrs. Xander Sr. felt like her whole life had been one long mistake.
Her pale lips trembled as she murmured, “She is innocent. She was only five back then. What the Scott family did has nothing to do with her.”
Then her voice hardened.
“But I will not allow her to stay in the Xander family any longer,”
Mrs. Xander Sr. forced herself upright and grabbed Chris by the wrist. It was like a final burst of strength, and her grip was so fierce it almost felt like it would cut into his skin,
In a hoarse voice, she said, “I only have one demand. Divorce her.”
