Chapter 158
The maintenance crew finally got the elevator open.
Winter immediately lifted her head from Chris’s chest.
Only then did she realize the elevator was stuck between floors, and the opening was so narrow that only one adult could fit through at a time
Outside stood the maintenance workers, Gavin, and Zion, who had been stopped by Gavin before he could come any closer. Zion was no match for him anyway.
Skyla was there too, sitting in her wheelchair with her caregiver behind her. Zac had come as well, along with several hospital executives who had rushed over.
There was a whole crowd outside.
The second Zac saw that Winter was safe, the tight knot in his chest finally eased.
Deep down, he had known that as long as Chris was with her, she would be fine.
But the moment Skyla saw Chris still holding Winter protectively, her eyes turned red. “Chris, get out of
there. Hurry.”
All the guests injured at the senior care center two days earlier had been placed in VIP rooms, but only Winter’s two coworkers had been assigned to this floor.
That morning, Skyla’s caregiver had seen Winter go to her coworkers’ room. So when Chris said he was leaving, Skyla had sent the caregiver after him.
She hadn’t wanted Chris and Winter to run into each other.
But the more she feared it, the more inevitable it seemed.
The caregiver came back and told her that Chris and Winter had gotten into the elevator together.
Just the two of them.
Skyla immediately had the caregiver help her into the wheelchair..
But the second they stepped out of the room, they heard the elevator had malfunctioned.
And now that the doors were open, he was still holding Winter.
A cold laugh came from the woman in Chris’s arms. “See? Your childhood sweetheart really is worried sick. Looks like you’ve got some comforting to do.”
Where no one outside could see, the hand around Winter’s waist tightened.
His voice was rough and low with warning. “Say one more word and I’ll leave you here.”
“What do I have to be scared of? I’ve got Zion and Zac. Mm-”

Before she could finish, Chris clamped a hand over her mouth.
Every second mattered during the rescue. He only covered her mouth for a moment before letting go. Then he put both hands around her waist, lifted her up, and passed her out through the opening.
The second he did, Zac reached for her. “Winnie, take my hand.”
He grabbed her wrist tightly and held his other hand above the opening so she would not hit her head climbing out.
Chris’s eyes turned cold.
But Winter in his arms didn’t hold back at all. She planted a foot on his thigh, used it as leverage, and climbed right out of the elevator.
Winter smiled at Zion and the others. “I’m fine.”
“Come with me and get it checked.”
“No. I’m fine Nothing feels wrong. I’m going home,” Winter said.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Skyla, her eyes red with worry, asking Chris if he was hurt.
Then Skyla looked over at her too.
And the moment their eyes met, Skyla’s expression turned strangely calm.
Winter walked out of the hospital and slipped a hand into her pocket.
The more she thought about how clever she had been, the more the corner of her mouth lifted.
Then her hand stopped.
She dug through her pocket again.
Nothing.
She stopped in her tracks and started patting through her pockets again.
