In the elevator, she had accidentally spotted her press badge sticking out of Chris’s coat pocket.
She had clearly taken it while he wasn’t paying attention, and she was certain he hadn’t noticed a thing.
So how had the badge she slipped into her own pocket disappeared again?
“Ms. Scott, what are you looking for?” Zion asked, following beside her.
Winter looked utterly defeated. She didn’t even need to think about it. Chris had obviously taken it back
again.
Whatever. She had already been planning to replace it anyway. She had only tried to grab it back because she happened to see it in the elevator.
“Nothing. Let’s go.”
Outside the ophthalmology department, Chris pulled a blue press badge from his coat pocket, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly.
He went in for an eye exam every month.
After the doctor finished checking his eyes, he asked, “Have you been working a lot of overtime lately?”
Chris gave a quiet hum.
“I’ve already told you to get more rest. Bloodshot eyes and broken capillaries may not seem like a big deal right now, but you still need to watch how much strain you’re putting on them. Your eyes are still healing, so you should avoid things like contact lenses altogether. Then again, you never-”
“I did,” Chris interrupted, his voice even.
The doctor blinked.
“I wore colored contacts.”
The doctor froze again. It took him a moment to process that before he took a breath and swallowed the comment that nearly slipped out.
Colored contacts. He meant cosmetic lenses.
He probably didn’t even know the usual term for them. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have described them so formally as “colored contacts.”
What surprised the doctor wasn’t the wording. It was the fact that Chris had worn them at all.
“You shouldn’t have been wearing cosmetic contacts. Your eyes are not in any condition for that kind of strain.”
Standing off to the side, Gavin quietly made a mental note that colored contacts were also called

cosmetic lenses
Chris stood up and said flatly, “I had my reasons.”

In his high-rise office, Fabian listened in silence as one of his men reported over the phone, “Mr. Kane, one of the shipments we were moving through Liono Port is gone.”
Fabian listened quietly, without a trace of surprise on his face. He only let out a cold laugh. “He’s just returning the favor.”
Only going up against an opponent like Chris could bring out his competitive streak.
After the call ended, he rolled the prayer beads in his hand and let his gaze settle on the photo lying on
the desk.
According to the update his men had sent back, every last man they had sent out the night before had been taken by the police. Beyond that, nothing else had leaked.
Fabian smiled lightly. “Come on, Mr. Steve. You’re the son of Liono City’s most powerful family. I’m just a rough man from the border. How would I dare tell you what to do? There is just one small favor I’d like to
ask.”
He slid a photo across the table.
The woman in it wore a smile Steve knew all too well. There was that tiny, faint mole on the bridge of her nose. When they were teenagers, he used to tease her and say that when she fell asleep in the garden, a bee must have landed there and left a little mess behind.
A streak of light swept past the glass door outside, briefly catching the hand at Steve’s side, clenched so tightly his knuckles had gone white.
“What exactly do you mean by this, Mr. Kane?” Steve asked as he sat down, still smiling, though there was something unreadable in it now.
Fabian answered lightly, “My men can’t get into Liono City right now, so I need you to do me a favor.”
He tapped the photo.
“Kill this reporter for me.”
