Chapter 157
“Quit trying to scare me. If the elevator suddenly drops while you’re holding me like this, we’re both dead.”
Maybe she imagined it, but after she said that, she thought she heard Chris laugh very softly.
“Fine by me.”
“What?”
Her head was pressed against his chest. In one ear, all she could hear was his heartbeat. The hearing in the other still hadn’t fully recovered, so everything sounded slightly muffled.
But before she could hear what he meant, the hand at the back of her head suddenly tightened.
The elevator, which had paused at the fifteenth floor, suddenly dropped.
Chris turned fast, bracing the back of his head and his back against the elevator wall.
He lifted Winter off the floor and held her against his bent thigh, one strong arm protecting the back of
her head and neck.
“Chris Xander, you jinxed it!” Winter’s face went white with fear. In her panic, her body reacted on instinct, pressing tightly against him.
Then she felt something warm and soft brush against her forehead.
Light as a feather.
Winter went completely still.
Chris had kissed her forehead.
At that exact moment, the falling elevator slammed to a stop.
Winter looked up instinctively, and Chris lowered his eyes to hers.
His glasses had been thrown off during the violent shaking. Now those cold, dark eyes were fixed on her with nothing to hide them, deep enough to pull her under.
She looked away at once and dragged in a shaky breath. “I’m writing an exposé on your hospital’s elevators. Obviously, nobody’s been keeping up with inspections.”
The elevator was stuck somewhere between floors, but Chris still didn’t let her go. His low voice was so close that the warmth of his breath seemed to tangle with hers.
“You’re not afraid of offending me?”
The hand at the back of her head shifted slightly.
Winter tilted her face up. From where Chris stood, her bright eyes looked slightly round, bright and a little innocent in a way that was unexpectedly charming.
Gavin’s steady voice came through the intercom. “Mr. Xander, maintenance is opening the elevator now. Please be careful.”
Then another voice came through too, weak and worried.
“Chris, are you okay?”
Winter’s long lashes lowered, casting a shadow over her eyes.
It was Skyla.
Skyla really was worried about him. Even injured and still in the hospital, she had come over anyway.
Winter shifted her head slightly. “You can let go of me now. If your childhood sweetheart sees this, she’s going to cry her eyes out.”
Just thinking about that made her stomach churn. She didn’t know if it was from the shaking or from being stuck in the elevator, but a wave of nausea suddenly hit her.
Chris still didn’t let her go. His eyes stayed cold. “If you want to get out of here alive, shut up.”
