So this was what being in a relationship felt like?
No wonder so many people loved dating. It was amazing.
"My mom is still making breakfast," Janet whispered like a thief. "I'll come down as soon as I'm done washing up."
"Okay."
Melvin replied. After hanging up, he entered the apartment complex and headed straight for the top floor.
—
After washing up.
Janet grabbed her backpack and walked into the living room, trying to look perfectly innocent. "Mom, I just remembered I have a paper to finish. I'm going to grab breakfast at school."
"Is it that urgent?" Saskia poked her head out from the kitchen.
Janet always finished her assignments ahead of time. She rarely crammed on the day of.
"V-Very urgent."
Janet was terrible at lying, especially to her mother.
"Alright then." Saskia didn't entirely buy it but let it go. "Be careful on the way."
"Mhm."
After saying goodbye, Janet swung her backpack over her shoulders and practically skipped to the front door.
Saskia stood frozen, a look of suspicion slowly creeping over her face.
Was it just her, or was her daughter acting really weird lately?
—
Closing the door behind her.
As Janet walked toward the elevator, she pulled out her phone to reply to Melvin's text.
Melvin: [Let's play a game.]
Janet: [?]
Melvin: [As the ancients said: Close your eyes and count to five. If you open them and see me, it proves our love will last forever.]
Janet naturally didn't believe a word of it, but she couldn't help laughing: [Which ancient philosopher said that? I'd love to know!]
Melvin arched an eyebrow and smiled: [Philosopher Steele.]
Janet: "?"
She stared at the screen for a few seconds before realization hit, almost making her laugh out loud.
Just then.
The elevator doors suddenly opened, and Melvin's figure appeared right in front of her.
Thinking about it, it really had only been five seconds.
"Morning, Janet," Melvin said, waving his phone at her.
"You—"
Janet was about to speak when she suddenly heard the sound of a door unlatching behind her.
Her heart suddenly skipped a beat.
"What are you looking at?" Janet asked softly, her cheeks burning.
Had she rushed out so fast that she hadn't rubbed her face cream in properly?
"Who has such a gorgeous girlfriend?" Melvin cupped her face, his thin lips curving into a devilish smile. "Oh, right. I do."
Janet's cheeks flushed even redder. Being held like this by him made her a little bashful. "Let's go before my mom notices."
"Alright."
Melvin ruffled her hair, then held his hand out to her, frowning. "Hold my hand. The elevator shakes too much, and I'm terrified of heights. I might die of fright."
"?"
Janet shot him a baffled look. A guy who literally raced sports cars for fun was claiming he was afraid of heights?
*Wow.*
He was really laying it on thick.
Janet stared at him for a few seconds before actively reaching out to take his hand.
The two of them happily stepped into the elevator.
What they completely failed to realize was...
The door next to them had been cracked open ever so slightly.
Saskia took in the entire scene in the hallway, her brow furrowing deeply.
