"Good." Melvin fed Janet another shrimp, laughing triumphantly.
—
After they finished eating.
The sky had already grown dark outside.
Melvin drove her to the Cloudscape Community, holding the car door and handing her some takeout containers. "Your mom's from the same region as this food, and the flavor is pretty authentic. Have her try it, too."
"Thank you, Mr. Steele." Janet hadn't expected him to be so thoughtful and felt a bit touched.
"It's nothing, don't get all teary-eyed on me." Melvin patted her head, laughing casually.
Janet tilted her head back, staring quietly at Melvin. The glow of the streetlamp illuminated him, making him look exceptionally warm.
"Mr. Steele..." Janet sniffled, her eyes welling with tears as she stared at him.
"Hmm?" Melvin stepped forward, his heart leaping, wondering if he had actually melted this girl's heart.
"The way you're standing and looking right now reminds me of my dad." Janet answered sincerely.
Melvin's smile froze on his face. He almost thought he had misheard.
Huh?
Like her... dad?
He hadn't even shaken off the 'brother' status yet, and suddenly he was being upgraded to 'dad'?
Heh.
That was just ridiculous.
"Really." Janet blinked, her eyes misty. "Before my dad passed away, he used to do this all the time, buying me and my mom food from our hometown."
"Is that so."
Melvin's playful smile faded a bit. He patted Janet's head, his tone uncharacteristically serious: "That's okay. Whenever you want to eat it, I'll buy it for you."
"Head back inside, the wind is pretty strong out here."
"Yeah."
"Ah, Mr. Steele." Janet stepped out in her pajamas, her hair a bit messy. "You were asleep when I got back last night, so I didn't want to wake you."
"Mr. Steele?" Saskia took a bite of food, her eyes crinkling into a smile. "You two have been spending a lot of time together lately, haven't you?"
"He's been helping me a lot." Janet didn't quite know what to say, her mind a mess. "Mom, I'm heading to school."
"Go ahead." Saskia nodded, but as soon as her daughter retreated to the bedroom, the smile on her face vanished.
She stared at the food on the table, and the jacket hanging on the rack, gradually falling into deep thought.
Come to think of it, Mr. Steele and Janet really had been seeing each other quite often lately. She had seen him around multiple times herself.
Could it be—
Saskia's eyes snapped wide open, and she clutched her chest in disbelief.
Could Mr. Steele possibly have feelings for Janet?
But Mr. Steele was several years older than Janet, and he was Juniper's brother. He wouldn't do something so unconscionable.
