In the end, The Black Room competition was scheduled for the weekend, three days away.
When the three boys left the Main Hall, they were caught in a swirl of conflicting emotions.
The path back to their respective wings started in the same direction, leading to a rare moment where all three walked together in absolute silence.
As they passed the Lakeheart Gazebo, Dorian and Leander stepped out. This was the only way back to the rear courtyard, so the two men were clearly lying in wait.
Julian felt a twinge of disgust. He threw a cold glance at Leander and offered a reluctant greeting. "Uncle Dorian."
Alaric's expression remained indifferent. "Uncle Dorian, Uncle Leander."
Cyril, perfectly well-mannered as always, smiled faintly. "Dad, Uncle Leander."
Dorian nodded, his gaze sweeping over the three boys. Just as he was about to speak, Alaric beat him to it. "I have something to take care of. Excuse me."
Without waiting for Dorian to respond, he stepped away and headed toward the covered walkway.
Suppressing his annoyance, Dorian turned to Cyril with a smile. "Cyril, take a walk with me?"
Cyril nodded.
Leander spoke up. "Julian, let's..."
Before he could finish, Julian rolled his eyes at Cyril, shoved his hands into his pockets, and walked away. Leander's face darkened, his fists clenching, but ultimately, he resigned himself and hurried after his son.
As Alaric passed through the Trellis Gate, his footsteps suddenly faltered. He turned around, his gaze piercing through the intricately carved wooden lattice to silently watch the two pairs of fathers and sons bathed in the moonlight.
Wesley followed Alaric's gaze. "Sir, are you missing your father?"
Alaric shifted his eyes and stared wordlessly at Wesley.
Wesley lowered his head and silently put on his sunglasses.
After a brief silence, Alaric turned and resumed his walk back into the Obsidian Estate.
Cyril's eyes flickered, and he subtly cast a glance in the direction of Caspian's quarters.
Dorian shifted his gaze, meeting Cyril's eyes. "I heard you left Sienna hanging, and she was very upset about it. What's going on? Do you already have another plan? Got your eye on the Blackthorne girl?"
Cyril suppressed the sharpness in his eyes, facing the question head-on. "President Markell is trying to use the new policies to win over the new-money syndicates, but whether he succeeds depends on if they're willing to accept his olive branch. The new presidential election is about to begin. What you want, Dad, is the President's daughter, not specifically the Markell family's daughter. So..."
Dorian's eyes filled with approval. "Go on."
Cyril guided the conversation smoothly. "So, I think it's time to change the bait. The pond is massive. We can't just limit ourselves to fishing for one particular catch."
Dorian nodded, a hint of hesitation in his gaze. "If you put it that way, what about Mina Blackthorne?"
"Mina is still young," Cyril replied. "Mr. Blackthorne clearly values her highly, so he'll definitely want to keep her close for a few more years. We might as well put that on hold for now."
Dorian felt like something was off. "But what if you wait too long and someone else snatches her up?"
Cyril looked up and smiled. "You should have a little faith in me, Dad. Once someone bites my hook, they won't be easily snatched away by anyone else."
