"Don't worry, Uncle Benedict knows what he's doing."
Julian watched Lara being dragged away. After thinking for a moment, he pulled Vivienne's hand off. "No, I can't just stand by and do nothing."
To be fair, Evelyn had always treated him well. Even though he looked down on his aunt and his cousin, he couldn't just watch Lara get killed.
As soon as Julian took a step, Benedict pointed his gun at him. "Julian, it's best you stay out of this."
Before Julian could react, Vivienne chopped Benedict's hand down with her bare hand. "Uncle Benedict, Grandpa said the Ravenshire family never points guns at their own."
Benedict was stunned. While he was furious, he hadn't lost his mind. As the formidable Mr. Ravenshire, he obviously knew what he was doing; pointing a gun at Julian was just to scare him. But he never expected Vivienne to be this feral, literally karate-chopping a gun down.
How was he supposed to intimidate anyone now?
Worried that Benedict would take his anger out on them, Bianca spread her arms and shielded Vivienne. "Uncle Benedict, what are you doing? Julian and Vivi didn't do anything wrong."
Vivienne turned to Alaric, who had been completely silent. "What are you just standing there for? Say something."
Alaric spoke mildly. "Uncle Benedict, Grandpa said that once you've let out your anger, you should come back."
Benedict couldn't find it in himself to blow up at the younger generation. He turned around and tossed the pistol to his assistant.
By this time, Lara had been forced onto a helicopter. The helicopter hovered and ascended. When it was about thirty feet off the ground, Lara was shoved out of the chopper.
Lara let out a bloodcurdling scream.
Just as Vivienne had said, Benedict knew exactly what he was doing. He only wanted to teach Lara a severe lesson; he never actually intended to kill her.
Lara plunged into the air, the rope snapping taut, leaving her dangling high above the ground.
Kael shook his head, clicking his tongue. "You've been having fun these past few days. I thought you had finally settled down. You've got some balls, man! She's the Arlington heiress. You don't even like her, and you still took her?"
They liked to play around, but they had rules. Never touch trouble. Girls like Lara—who had both looks and a powerful family—were the hardest to handle. They were all in the same social circle. If something went wrong, it'd be hell to explain to their families.
Preston, on the other hand, had taken his release and tossed her out like garbage. That was why Kael said he was bold.
Preston let out a lazy laugh. "I thought she was somewhat smart, but she's nothing special. Boring. Why keep her around if she's just going to disgust me?"
"Fair point," Kael said, giving him a thumbs-up. "But man, being this picky isn't great. The stakes keep getting higher. What are you gonna do when you run out of prey?"
Preston set his phone down. "Funny you ask. I've already set my sights on a new prey."
