Khloe and Nick had said something like that to each other countless times too.

No matter how long they had together, she would stay by his side.

And yet, it was Khloe who had broken that promise first.

"Khloe, are things all right on your end? I heard that Nick..."

"Don't worry about us. Just focus on staying by Michael's side. Life is bound to have its regrets, but being with the person you love is still a kind of completeness."

Khloe's voice sounded light, but Winnie could feel the weight underneath it.

She didn't know how to comfort Khloe properly. Khloe had endured so much; Winnie couldn't bring herself to offer some hollow, meaningless comfort.

Winnie had just hung up with Khloe when Michael returned to the room. She turned and found herself face to face with a man wrapped in nothing but half a towel.

Michael's hair was still damp, and though he'd lost weight, the muscle built up from years of training only made him look leaner, sharper. The lines along his waist and stomach alone were enough to make anyone's mouth water.

"Done showering?"

"Talking to Khloe?"

They spoke almost at the same time.

Michael nodded and turned toward the closet as if it were nothing, pulling out a change of clothes.

Winnie wrapped her arms around him from behind. "I told Khloe we're not heading back for now, that we're having some time to ourselves here in Jayelle City. She sends her regards."

Michael let out a light "Mm" and said nothing more.

Winnie was a little surprised. She'd expected him to at least ask a question or two, no matter what.

Before falling asleep, Winnie held onto Michael's body. He lay quiet, his breathing slow and steady, but he'd grown far quieter than before.

He answered warmly enough whenever she spoke to him, but he no longer brought up topics of his own.

Khloe had been right. Michael really was putting on a brave face. Maybe even smiling in front of her took real effort now.

"Michael, are you upset with Khloe?"

"What makes you say that?"

At Winnie's question, Michael's head, buried in her hair, shifted slightly, and a lazy hum rumbled in his throat.

"Khloe told me she blames herself over what happened to you, that it was her getting tangled up with Lacuna that led to everyone around her getting hurt..."

Winnie kept her voice light, testing the waters.
