In the middle of the violent jolt, Winnie held tight to Michael's waist while he shielded her head with his arms.
Luckily, the drop lasted only a few seconds before the elevator jerked to a sudden stop.
"Don't be scared... it's probably just a malfunction... elevators these days are all pretty safe."
Michael drew a breath, his voice carrying a note of tension, but he still looked far steadier than Winnie, who hadn't yet caught her breath from the shock.
Winnie nodded, though she was careful not to move too much as she pulled herself off of him.
Michael got up right after her, and the two of them crowded around the control panel. The power seemed to have cut out entirely; pressing the emergency call button got no response.
Winnie pulled out her phone. "No signal, of course!"
Michael pulled out his own phone at once, raising it overhead in search of a signal. "It's fine. This is a mall elevator. Someone should come fix it soon enough."
Winnie said nothing, only nodded and buried herself back against Michael's chest.
A malfunction like this was frightening, but elevators all had emergency braking systems; it wasn't really life-threatening.
Still, cut off from the world so suddenly, an unspoken panic crept over them both.
After some unknown stretch of time, Winnie suddenly asked Michael, "If today turned out to be our last day, would you have any regrets?"
Michael had been staring blankly at the emergency call button. Her question seemed to pull him back to the present.
"That won't happen. We're going to be fine. I'm here, so don't be scared."
Winnie laughed softly. "I know. I'm just curious. They always say you never know whether tomorrow or a disaster comes first. I've had my share of close calls growing up, so just answer me honestly."
Michael frowned at that and took a long moment to think it over before answering. "Of course I'd have regrets."
"Like what?"
"Plenty. Not getting to see our child born. Not getting to make more good memories with you. Not having had the chance to be a proper son to my father. Learning all that knowledge and never actually making my own mark on the family business. If I died today, I'd have far too many regrets to even list them all."
Michael's answer was completely sincere, and Winnie reached up and stroked the side of his face, satisfied.
She stared into his eyes, and without warning, tears welled up in her own.
Michael panicked. "Why are you crying? Did I say something wrong?"

The readers' comments on the novel: Billionaire's Match (by Tangy Candy)
Will more chapters be downloaded? It’s been awhile and I’m still seeing chapter 1175....
When will chapter 1044 and more bd downloaded?...
This is the story that I like reading. The heroine got the hold of the situation right away. No humiliation, no injustice, which keep the readers feeling bad all the way while waiting for the right thing to settle in favor of the heroine. Good storyline, congrats writer!...
