"Julian, you don't have to pretend. I know everything about you and Evelyn. She told me."
Julian's fingers froze on the steering wheel. "What exactly did she tell you?"
"Oh, come on. Just that you two want to rekindle things. So just divorce Hazel already! It's not like you even like her anyway."
The car fell dead silent, the heavy atmosphere suffocating the space between them.
Julian's jaw locked, the muscles jumping. When he finally spoke, his voice carried a crushing weight and an icy fury he didn't even realize he possessed.
"Hazel is your sister-in-law. How dare you speak about her like that."
Chloe was momentarily stunned but quickly swallowed her surprise.
She let out a scoff. "Give me a break. I don't want a sister-in-law like her."
She turned to look out the window, her voice hardening. "Julian, do you know what she said to me back when I was falling apart? She told me I lacked perseverance."
Chloe's fingers tightened around the seatbelt, her knuckles turning white. "I was struggling so much abroad. I stayed up until three in the morning writing papers. Before exams, I was so anxious my hands shook too badly to even write. I called her, sobbing that I wanted to come home, and she just coldly told me to 'keep going.' That was it."
"I know she sent me gifts, but so what? I needed someone to cry with me on the phone, not a delivery dispatcher who just clicked 'order' to an address. If Evelyn hadn't constantly been there to encourage me, I would have cracked ages ago."
"If you had cracked and come back, you wouldn't have your degree," Julian shot back.
Chloe choked on her words, her neck stiffening as she stubbornly looked away.
"Evelyn is the one who got me through it! If I'm thanking anyone, it's her, not that stone-faced woman."
Her voice was defiant and completely unreasonable. "Whatever, I refuse to let you stay with her."
