Evelyn's voice flowed through the car speakers, laced with a warm laugh. "Chloe! You made it? Was the trip exhausting?"
"Not at all!" Chloe twisted her entire body around in the passenger seat, leaning over the console toward the speakers. "Evelyn, where are you? Come over to my place! I brought you presents!"
The line went silent for a split second, and the atmosphere grew incredibly awkward.
Chloe had talked to Evelyn enough times to instantly sense something was wrong.
"Chloe, I'm a bit busy with some things right now, so it might have to be later," Evelyn replied. Her tone was still gentle, but there was an unmistakable strain in it.
Chloe's expression darkened. She shot a pointed look at Hazel, her bright eyes carrying a hint of hostility, before speaking directly to the speaker. "Evelyn, is someone bullying you? Tell me, and I'll get justice for you."
The air inside the cabin plummeted to freezing.
Julian shot Chloe a look of silent, intense warning.
"No one is bullying me," Evelyn chuckled softly. "I've just been a little overwhelmed lately. I'm so glad you're back, Chloe. If you have time tomorrow, let's go shopping."
Chloe pursed her lips, wanting to push the issue, but Julian was already glaring at her from the corner of his eye.
Chloe scoffed quietly. "Fine. See you tomorrow, Evelyn."
The call disconnected, leaving the car in a suffocating silence.
Hazel broke it first. "I still have some lab data to organize. Just drop me off up ahead, and I'll catch a cab to work."
Julian furrowed his brow, catching her eye in the rearview mirror. "Chloe just got back today. Can't that lab data wait until tomorrow?"
Chloe, who had gone back to her phone, looked up at this.
She disliked Hazel—she had made that abundantly clear at the airport. But she hated the feeling of being sidelined even more.
