Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 186

Julian paused halfway up the stairs. He turned his head slightly, his tone carrying a sharp edge of correction.

"Stop calling her by her first name like that. Show some respect. She's your sister-in-law."

Chloe rolled her eyes and flopped back onto the sofa. She wasn't about to acknowledge that. Let anyone else play pretend—Hazel didn't deserve the title.

Marching into her guest room, Chloe slammed the door, threw herself onto the plush mattress, and immediately pulled up Evelyn's contact on her phone.

Her thumbs flew across the screen, firing off a rapid text.

"Evelyn, Julian and Hazel are going to the hospital tomorrow for a fertility checkup. You need to come! They've been married forever with no kids, so it's obviously Hazel's fault. Let's go watch her make a complete fool of herself."

The message popped up just as Evelyn stepped out of her luxurious en-suite bathroom. Towel-drying her damp hair, she glanced at the illuminated screen.

The words reflected in her eyes, merging with a flash of dark, calculated malice. A slow, wicked smile spread across her lips. She paused her drying.

"Chloe, I don't think it's appropriate for me to be there. That's between your brother and his wife."

Chloe's reply was instantaneous. "Why wouldn't it be appropriate? You're the one who should be married to him. Hazel is just stealing what's yours. Once the results prove she's barren, I'm kicking her out of this house."

Evelyn stared at the text. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard for a long moment before she typed, "But what if the issue is with your brother?"

"Evelyn, you of all people should know whether my brother has any... issues, right?"

Chloe smirked deeply at her own text, locking her phone and tossing it aside.

Evelyn stood frozen in the middle of her bedroom, water droplets from her wet hair soaking into the silk of her robe. Her heart began to race with frantic, thrilling anticipation.

Chloe's offhand comment had just sparked a brilliant idea. Whether Julian was fertile or not wasn't something she technically knew for sure.
