"Evelyn is busy with work. Hazel came with me to pick you up."
Chloe followed his gaze and finally looked at Hazel.
The unbridled, radiant enthusiasm on her face vanished the second she locked eyes with her.
The corners of her mouth curled up, but the smile never reached her eyes. She offered a flat, lifeless, "Hi, Hazel."
A sharp pang of hurt washed over Hazel's heart. She clearly remembered how, right before Chloe left for college, the girl had desperately clutched Hazel's wrist, crying about how much she would miss her.
Now, Chloe was looking at her like an absolute stranger.
Still, Hazel managed a gentle, welcoming smile. "Was the flight exhausting? Make sure you get some good rest when we get back."
Chloe gave her a dismissive glance, dropped the fake smile entirely, and turned her attention exclusively back to Julian, ignoring Hazel completely.
"Let's go home, Julian."
She grabbed Julian's hand and dragged him toward the parking lot, the wheels of her pink suitcase rattling loudly against the tiled floor.
Julian let himself be pulled along for a few steps before glancing back at Hazel.
"Hurry up, honey."
Hazel took a deep breath and followed them.
Once in the car, Julian started the engine. Chloe sat in the passenger seat—the exact spot Hazel usually occupied.
The car was quiet. Suddenly, Chloe spoke up without looking away from her phone. "I heard Evelyn has been back for a while. Is she divorced? Julian, what are you going to do?"
The air in the car instantly froze.
