First thing the next morning, Chloe stood by the entryway mirror applying lipstick, practically vibrating with excitement to see Evelyn.
She aggressively rushed Julian, who had no choice but to grab his keys and head out.
The car stopped outside Evelyn's apartment building. Chloe pushed the door open and started sprinting toward the entrance. After two steps, she realized there were no footsteps following her.
She spun around and saw Julian still in the driver's seat, hands draped lazily over the steering wheel, his seatbelt still fastened.
"Julian, aren't you coming in?"
"I've got work to do. Go catch up with Evelyn yourself."
Chloe grinned. This was exactly what she wanted. There were things she needed to say that would be much harder to articulate with Julian hovering around.
She slammed the car door and practically skipped into the lobby. She hit the elevator button, the massive smile never leaving her face as the doors slid shut.
The elevator stopped on the top floor. The moment the doors parted, Evelyn was already standing in the doorway. She was wearing a beige flowing loungewear dress, her hair pinned up loosely. The second she saw Chloe, a radiant, welcoming smile bloomed on her face.
"Evelyn!" Chloe tackled her into a hug, wrapping her arms tightly around Evelyn's waist. "I missed you so much!"
The impact knocked Evelyn back a half-step. Once she steadied herself, she lovingly patted Chloe's head. "I missed you too, Chloe. Come on in, I got you a present."
"We really are on the same wavelength!" Chloe pulled back, shoving her own shopping bags into Evelyn's arms. "This is what I got you."
Evelyn took the bags, glancing down at the high-end packaging, her eyes curving with delight. "Thank you, Chloe. I love it."
She led Chloe inside, then turned to the coffee table to grab her own gift. "I got this for you. I figured you'd definitely need it now that you're back. I hope you like it."
Chloe's eyes barely skimmed over the presents; she didn't even bother unwrapping them. Instead, she grabbed Evelyn's hand mid-presentation, her tone urgent and burning with intensity. "I love it, I love it."
