Zachary Sutton drove Vera Yates back downtown, and the two remained in a heavy silence the entire way.
Vera knew her "threat" had pissed him off, but she couldn't care less.
It wasn't until they returned to the apartment that Zachary finally moved. He stepped through the door, tugged at his tie, and leaned back against the sofa with his eyes closed.
Vera stood behind him and gently shut the door.
With her back to him, her lips curved into a faint smile before she finally turned around.
She let the words slip out coolly, "Zachary, your mother came to see me on the cruise."
The man's eyes snapped open. "What did you two talk about?"
On the cruise, Tamara had slipped away from the crowd and arranged to meet Vera privately in the cafe.
When Vera arrived, Tamara was already waiting.
"Have a seat, Ms. Yates."
Vera was a bit nervous. She had seen Tamara a few times three years ago, but ever since Zachary got engaged to Audrina Monroe, she had been strictly forbidden from appearing in front of the Sutton family.
Tamara got straight to the point. "I know things between you and Zachary have never truly ended."
Vera's grip tightened around her purse strap.
"I asked you here today because I want to know something." Tamara picked up her teacup, her eyes lifting to shoot Vera a sharp look. "What exactly is it that you want?"
If she wanted money, that was no problem.
If she wanted a status... Tamara would be the first to reject it.
It wasn't out of any great affection for Audrina, but rather because a rival branch of the Sutton family was returning to Kingshire soon. At a critical juncture like this, Zachary could not afford to make a single misstep within the family.
Tamara's directness actually put Vera at ease.
The tension drained from her shoulders, and she smiled. "Mrs. Sutton, I want to marry Zachary."
Tamara set her teacup down. She wasn't angry or surprised by Vera's boldness.
She simply asked, "Do you really think he can marry you right now? Zachary is in line to inherit the Sutton Group. As long as Waldo is alive, the future Mrs. Sutton can only be Audrina."
Vera lowered her eyes.
Her gaze fell to her flat stomach. "But Mrs. Sutton, I'm pregnant."
She hadn't expected Zachary to come home at all today.
But there he was, slumped on the sofa. His tie hung loosely around his neck, and his jacket was tossed over the armrest. He looked like he had sunken into the cushions, remaining motionless for a long time.
His shirt was wrinkled, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his lips were so dry they were peeling. He looked like he hadn't even had a sip of water all day.
It seemed Vera had not been easy to coax.
Audrina placed her bag on the cabinet, walked over, and sat down beside him.
She asked with feigned concern, "What happened?"
Zachary fluttered his heavy eyelids. "You're back?"
His voice was incredibly hoarse.
"Yeah." Audrina asked, "Why are you so exhausted? Have you had dinner?"
"I ate."
She was just asking for the sake of it. Whether he had eaten or eaten well, she couldn't care less.
