On the way down, Sebastian walked slightly ahead while Eleanor and Franco followed. They looked like three strangers leaving a board meeting, devoid of any unnecessary interaction.

As the car pulled out of the hospital, Eleanor sat in the backseat, glancing at the back of her son's head in the driver's seat. She chose her words carefully.

"Sebastian, you remember the Kingshire Chamber of Commerce event mid-year, right?"

"Yeah."

"Pretty much anyone who's anyone in Kingshire will be there. Do you have plans for that day?"

"No."

Eleanor paused for a moment before probing, "Then have you decided on a date? If not, Mr. Ryan's daughter..."

"I have a date."

Sebastian cut her off before she could even finish.

He used only four words from beginning to end, shoving whatever Eleanor was going to say next right back down her throat.

She opened her mouth, then closed it, unsure of what else she could say.

Sebastian had never publicly brought a date to such events. Hearing such a definitive answer made warning bells scream in Eleanor's mind.

In the rearview mirror, Sebastian's expression remained entirely impassive.

Eleanor glanced sideways at Franco and shot him a pointed look.
