When Zachary came downstairs, the living room was practically pitch black, save for a single floor lamp casting a dim, yellow halo over the sofa.
Vera Yates sat quietly in the pool of light.
She was wearing a loose, thin sweater, her head bowed as her fingers gently traced the swell of her pregnant stomach.
The shadows hid the expression in her downcast eyes.
Zachary froze at the bottom of the stairs.
Hearing his footsteps, Vera looked up.
She looked awful. Her face was entirely bare of makeup and profoundly exhausted. Deep, bruised circles shadowed her eyes, and her lips were cracked and peeling. The moment she saw him, her eyes turned red, thick tears welling up, threatening to spill over.
"Zachary..."
Her voice was ragged, like she hadn't had a drop of water in days, or like she had been crying for hours.
The room was completely empty. Zachary took a deep breath and slowly walked toward her.
He had specifically ordered her to stay quietly in Southwood City. What the hell was she doing in Kingshire?!
The last time she had pulled a stunt like this, she had stalked Audrina and him near the Sutton Group headquarters. When Zachary caught her, he had been terrified she would cause a public scandal and immediately shipped her off into hiding.
He brutally suppressed the explosive rage boiling in his veins and demanded coldly, "Who told you to come here?!"
Vera bit her lip, and the tears finally broke, spilling down her pale cheeks.
"I couldn't see you. I didn't know what else to do, so I came here..."
She touched her stomach. "Zachary, this is your baby. You can't just throw me away."
He stared down at her.
She was weeping, pathetic, and desperate. Just like every time before, waiting for him to soften and coddle her.
But this time, Zachary didn't comfort her.
"Follow me."
Dropping those three icy words, he turned and walked away without a backward glance.
...
Audrina followed Sebastian back to his apartment.
He bent down and pulled a pair of slippers from the shoe cabinet for her. By the time she had them on, he was already walking back from the bedroom, handing her a set of his sleepwear.
