Baxter:
After hearing everything from my wolf, I felt both bad and guilty.
I could tell Lena understood the assignment because she started pacing away.
Axe didn't follow her this time. He looked miserable. He had revealed all his secrets to her.
I could only imagine how he felt at that moment, probably thinking she saw him as weak and was now walking away from him.
And she really was walking away.
All those thoughts circled through Axe's mind as he lowered his head.
"I'm sorry, Baxter. I lied to you. Because of my lie, you ended up with someone who wanted to kill you," he apologized.
I felt his eyes begin to water.
"It's just that I had gotten so lonely. I didn't want you to be the one I lost. And I truly never stopped loving Madeline. I just knew that her love for us was so strong, and ours for her was so strong, that she could come between us."
He sniffled and rubbed at his eye with one paw before lifting his head.
We watched Lena disappear behind the tree, circling around it.
"But how was I supposed to know I'd introduce you to a deadly woman? I was afraid of losing you, yet I handed you over to the very person who almost made me lose you completely."
He was still speaking when Madeline appeared from around the tree in her human form, wearing a white silk dress.
She had transitioned back.
It was safe to say that both my wolf and I wondered why.
Madeline took a few steps toward Axe, then knelt beside him and gently ran her fingers through his fur.
"Axe, you think he hates you? You think he doesn't like you?" Madeline asked.
I felt Axe immediately move closer to her, wanting her fingers deeper in his fur.
She scratched gently through his coat, and he gradually relaxed beneath her touch.
"That's not true," she said, gently lifting his muzzle and cupping either side of his neck in her hands, continuing to massage him. "You know, when he lost you–"
She slipped one hand beneath his muzzle while the other stroked the top of his head.
His ears slowly lowered because of her touch.
"Baxter lost himself when he lost you," she continued. "You know, those were the worst times. When I found out he had lost you, I realized why he didn't feel like the same Baxter as before. There wasn't a single moment when he didn't think about you."
Madeline's eyes began to fill with tears as she remembered those days, and mine did too.
If only.
I started remembering them as well.
Ever since the transition, more memories had begun returning to me, mainly because I now had access to my wolf's thoughts.
