Sawyer:
Flashback:
As expected, for the next thirty minutes, Baxter was absent.
I was getting bored in my cell.
As always, every evening, his friend from Werewolf Land called him, and the two of them talked about all sorts of nonsense.
The sad part was that she saved up her own money and gave it to her mother, who passed it on to Baxter’s father so she could talk to him.
I was getting annoyed.
Not only that, she kept writing him letter after letter, and Baxter’s father, trying to keep him sane in here, made sure those letters reached him.
Otherwise, Baxter would have completely lost hope.
It irritated me. She was taking up all his time.
"There he is again, all happy."
I thought bitterly, watching him smile as he reached our cell, stepped inside, and sat down.
We had been put in the same cell.
My parents had arranged it because I’d requested it.
Otherwise, I had refused to take my medicine.
In this madhouse, I was living only because of Baxter, and I hoped he felt the same way.
“You know, she was telling me about this funny thing that happened at the playground the other day. There were little kids there, pups. She and her sister were there, and her sister is really mean,” Baxter began, launching into a story I didn’t want to hear.
That girl had already wasted all his time, and now he was going to spend what little we had left talking about her.
Seriously?
“Can’t we talk about something else?”
As soon as I said it, Baxter’s smile disappeared.
“I mean, what’s so special about her? She calls you, tells you pointless stories, and you get impressed.”
I cringed, hugging my knees.
“Are you jealous?” Baxter asked before chuckling. “Come on, I’m your friend.”
He got up from his bed, crossed over to mine, and wrapped an arm around me.
“You know, tomorrow night we’ll have some fun. We’ll sneak out and take the back way to the kitchen. They’re making all kinds of good food tomorrow. I heard the doctors are having a party,” Baxter said, giving my shoulder a gentle squeeze.
“Forget it. Yeah, we’ll have fun. We’ll party for a little while, and then you’ll start missing your friend again.”
I cringed.
“Boy, what do you want me to say?” he asked, pulling his arm from my shoulders and looking away.
