I was having a little trouble sleeping alone, but soon everything was going to be resolved.

I just had no idea how quickly it would happen.

That morning, when Baxter finally came into his room, I woke up.

I watched as he settled onto the couch.

He rested for a while before leaving, saying that another guest was coming.

But from the way he had come in, it seemed like he had a lot on his mind.

Finally, sometime in the afternoon, he returned to the bedroom.

I was getting a little frustrated by then.

Although it was better than the basement, I still hated the fact that I had to stay hidden in the bedroom because Madeline, her children, and her friends were wandering around outside.

For now, though, the bedroom was still the better option.

Baxter had decided the same thing.

Since everyone was still so bitter about me, it was better if I didn't insist on leaving the room for the time being.

"You know how hard it is for me to stay in this room?" I asked Baxter with a pout, setting the magazine down.

"I'm taking care of that right now," Baxter replied, pulling his hands from his pockets. Then he adjusted his collar.

Whenever I looked at him, only one thought came to mind: how good our hot bodies would feel pressed together beneath one blanket, and how Madeline would be burning with jealousy.

"Really? What have you decided?" I asked in the most innocent voice I could manage.

Baxter gave me a faint smile and walked toward me.

He took my hands in his, and I noticed how strong his hands were.

My fingers looked so small in his grasp.

Then he smiled at me.

"In just a few days, there'll be a ring on this finger, and we'll elope to one of the most expensive retreats I've been planning for you."

My heart almost stopped with happiness.

My eyes widened, and I tried to wrap my arms around him, but he stopped me with a laugh.

"Not yet. This time, I'm not touching you until after we're married."

After that, my respect for him genuinely grew.

At least, unlike Elgin, he hadn't let me get close to him only to humiliate me afterward.

"Tell me. When?" I asked anxiously, stomping my feet in stubborn impatience.

"I think in a day or two."
