First contact
Amber POV
For a few seconds after Jason’s transmission, neither of us spoke.
The only sounds coming from his side were hurried footsteps, heavy breathing, and Marcus quietly giving orders. to the rest of the team.
Jason was the first to break the silence.
“Where are you?”
I blinked, momentarily caught off guard.
“What?”
“Amber, where are you?” he repeated, more firmly this time. “Are you safe?”
For a moment, the strategist in me disappeared, replaced by the wife who had just spent nineteen minutes imagining the worst possible scenarios.
“I’m at the cave command center,” I finally answered. “The mountain one.”
Jason visibly relaxed.
“The impossible one to reach?”
“The very same.”
“Good.”
I almost laughed.
“That’s your definition of good? I’m trapped inside a cave on an island where people are getting shot.”
“Exactly. Nobody sane would climb that mountain.”
“That’s surprisingly reassuring.” 1
Behind him, Marcus interrupted.
“Tell her we’re moving farther north.”
Jason nodded before looking back at the tablet.
“What are you doing?”
I turned the camera toward the dismantled computers spread across my desk.
“I’m trying to contact Mr. Stait and the governments.”
Jason frowned.
“Have you managed to reach anyone?”
“Not yet.”
“Keep trying.”

།
“I intend to.”
e connection flickered as Jason lowered his voice.
“And Amber?”
“Yes?”
“Don’t leave the cave,”
I smiled weakly.
“I wasn’t planning to.”
For the next hour, I tried every secure frequency I could think of.
Mr. Stait’s military number.
His private line.
The emergency channels.
Nothing
No response.
Not even an automated message.
That worried me more than I cared to admit.
Mr. Stait wasn’t the type of man to ignore an emergency.
Unless he couldn’t answer.
I pushed that thought aside and redirected my efforts toward the other countries.
The first breakthrough came from Sum.
The face of Secretary of Defense Greg Peterson appeared on my screen.
He looked exhausted.
And, judging by the people running behind him, absolute chaos had erupted outside the island.
“Mrs. Sun.”
“Secretary Peterson.”
He immediately leaned closer to the camera.
“How are you contacting us?”
I blinked.
“Through the command center’s satellite.”
The secretary exchanged a look with someone off-screen.
“We lost all contact with the island almost two hours ago.”

My heart skipped.
What?”
“The military satellites stopped transmitting, the emergency channels went silent, and every command center disappeared from our network.”
I stared at him.
“You couldn’t contact anyone?”
He slowly shook his head.
“No.”
The secretary took a deep breath.
“Mrs. Sun, you’re the first person to reach the mainland since communications were lost.”
For a moment, the cave became completely silent.
Even the guards stopped moving.
I tightened my grip on the table.
“Then listen carefully.”
And so I explained everything.
The explosions.
The destroyed command centers.
The false evacuation.
The bodies on the beach.
The missing Evermore teams.
And my suspicion that the island owner had orchestrated the entire disaster.
Peterson listened without interrupting me once.
When I finished, he rubbed his forehead.
“The island owner is still talking to the media.”
I frowned.
“What is he saying?”
“That the competition is still underway.”
I blinked.
“You’re kidding.”
“He claims that the explosions are part of the game and that all participants are safe.”
I stood up so quickly that my chair fell backward.

“Safe? There are bodies on the beach!”
Peterson nodded grimly.
“He keeps repeating that everyone is fine and that the competition is entering its final phase.”
The secretary looked genuinely disturbed.
“He also insists that nobody should interfere with the island until the game ends.”
That was enough for me.
Every doubt I still had vanished.
“He knows.”
Peterson remained silent.
“He has to know,” I continued. “There’s no way command centers are exploding and military personnel are dying while he keeps telling the world that everything is normal.”
The secretary nodded slowly.
“We’re beginning to think the same thing.”
I sat back down, trying to calm my breathing.
“He never intended to give anyone the island.”
Peterson didn’t disagree.
“What do you think his objective is?”
I looked at the reports about his children scattered across my desk.
“Revenge.”
The secretary’s expression darkened.
“I’ll immediately contact the other countries, including River City, and explain the situation.”
“Good.”
“We’ll organize a rescue mission.”
I shook my head.
“Don’t accuse Evermore yet.”
Peterson frowned.
“You still think they might be innocent?”
“I think it’s possible that they’re guilty.”
I glanced at the smoke rising on my satellite feed.
“But it’s also possible that someone is using them as cover.”
The secretary nodded.

“Understood.”
Before ending the call, he asked one last question.
“Mrs. Sun… are you safe?”
I looked around the cave, at the two guards protecting the entrance and at the dozens of screens surrounding me..
“Safer than most.”
Peterson sighed.
“Stay alive. Right now, you’re our only source of information from the island.”
The screen went dark.
I leaned back in my chair, suddenly realizing the weight of what he had just said.
The mainland knew nothing.
The governments knew nothing.
The military knew nothing.
As far as the world was concerned, the competition was still happening.
And somehow, out of the hundreds of soldiers trapped on this island, I was the first person to tell them that the game had become a massacre.

Amber POV
For the twentieth time, I tried Mr. Stait’s number.
For the twentieth time, Lexpected silence.
Instead, the screen suddenly lit up.
“Amber?”
I almost dropped my phone.
“Mr. Stait!”
The old man looked exhausted. His tie was loose, and there were at least four military officers arguing in the background.
“Thank God,” I whispered.
He frowned immediately.
“How are you contacting me?”
“The island’s command center.”
His expression changed from confusion to outright alarm.
“That’s impossible.”
“What do you mean impossible?”
“The island’s communication channels were blocked hours ago.” He glanced at someone beside him. “The owner himself assured us that nobody on the island could contact the outside world.”
I felt my stomach twist.
“Well, he lied.”
Mr. Stait rubbed his forehead.
“I just spent the last hour talking to him. Amber, the man looked deeply suspicious.”
“You talked to him?”
“He’s insisting that the competition is still underway, that the explosions are controlled exercises, and that nobody should interfere.”
I let out a humorless laugh.
“Meanwhile, people are dying on the beach.”
The color drained from his face.
“What?”
I quickly explained everything.
The destroyed command centers.

The false evacuation.
The bodies Jason had seen.
The missing Evermore teams.
The fact that I had already managed to contact Sum’s Secretary of Defense.
“And I told him we need an emergency evacuation immediately.”
Mr. Stait was silent for several seconds.
“How many casualties?”
“I don’t know.”
“How many survivors?” 1
“More than we thought.”
He leaned closer to the screen.
“What about River City?”
At least that was one question I could answer.
“At the moment, all River City participants are safe.”
The relief on his face was immediate.
“They’re all alive?”
“They’re on their way to me.”
As if summoned by my words, Jasmine’s face suddenly appeared in the corner of my screen.
“Amber!”
I switched the audio to the cave speakers.
“Jasmine, where are you?”
“About an hour away.”
Behind her, I could hear dozens of footsteps and people talking.
“We ran into other teams along the way.”
“How many?”
Jasmine grinned.
“You were right. The beach was a trap.”
My heart sank at the confirmation.
“Who did you find?”
She began counting on her fingers.

“Jason’s team. Franklin’s team. Two teams from Cloud Country. One from Snake Nest. One from Lakeview. Another team from Sum.”
I blinked.
“That’s…”
“Eight teams total, including ours.”
Even Mr. Stait looked stunned.
“You have eight teams heading toward the cave?”
Jasmine nodded proudly.
“We told everyone what you discovered.”
Mr. Stait suddenly straightened in his chair.
“Amber, is there any way to obtain proof?”
“What kind of proof?”
“The massacre on the beach.”
The cave fell silent.
“We need evidence against the owner. Photographs. Videos. Anything.”
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
