Amber POV
Alexander's shoulders relaxed slightly.
"Does he know what's happening?"
"Enough."
"He gave you the chip."
It wasn't a question.
"Yes."
Alexander looked down.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
"My own son."
There was something almost amused in his voice.
Not happy.
Just bitter.
"My own son had the evidence that finally ended me."
"Your actions ended you. Oliver simply made it harder for you to lie about them."
Alexander looked at me again.
Then, surprisingly, nodded.
"Fair."
I hadn't expected that.
"I want something from you."
"No."
"You haven't heard it."
"I don't make deals involving children."
"It's not a deal."
His expression changed.
"Make sure he's okay."
I stared at him.
Alexander Vincent—the man who had planned the abduction of other people's children as a business strategy—was asking me to protect his.
"Mr. Stait is protecting Oliver."
"I'm not asking about today."
He leaned forward as far as his restraints allowed.
"When this is finished, make sure he grows up fine."
I said nothing.
"Don't let my family turn him into me."
That silenced the room.
Alexander glanced away.
"He's a Vincent heir. There will be people who want him because of that. People who will try to control him. Others will want revenge because of me."
"Then give investigators every name."
"I am."
"Every one."
His eyes returned to mine.
"I said I am."
I studied him.
"I'll make sure Oliver knows he has choices."
Alexander nodded once.
It was the only promise I was willing to give him.
Then my patience ended.
"Jason."
Alexander's expression became serious.
"I told you. I don't know where my uncle took him."
"Then you have nothing for me."
"You're searching River City."
I froze.
"How do you know that?"
Alexander smiled faintly.
"Because that's what my uncle would expect you to do."
Marcus stepped closer to the screen.
"Explain."
Alexander ignored him.
His eyes remained on me.
"You're thinking like Amber Asher."
"What does that mean?"
"Companies. Properties. Shell corporations. Warehouses. Cameras. Financial records."
My stomach tightened.
"You're looking for where White would hide someone."
"Yes."
"Wrong question."
I hated riddles.
"Then give me the right one."
Alexander leaned toward the camera.
"Where did the Vincents hide people before companies and cameras existed?"
Silence.
Something cold moved through me.
Sum.
I knew the answer before he said anything else.
"Your home," Alexander said.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"My home is the castle."
"Your other home."
Sum.
The land connected to my family's original history.
The Embers.
My mind started moving.
The Ember family had once been the largest family in Sum.
They had defeated the Vincents.
Exiled them.
Their history went back generations.
So did their land.
Alexander watched realization spread across my face.
"Closer," he said quietly.
"Closer to what?"
"Your home in Sum."
I stared at him.
