Amber POV
Mr. Sun left for Sum before sunrise. Mrs. Sun wanted to go with him; I could tell from the way she stood beside him in my hospital room, holding his hand as though letting go would somehow mean losing both her husband and her grandson at once. But someone needed to remain with the children, and neither she nor Grandpa Asher was willing to leave me while I was still hospitalized.
Sum's president would be waiting for them when they arrived. The moment Mr. Stait contacted his government and explained what Alexander had revealed, Sum had mobilized its own people. Whatever political tensions existed between our families, governments, and the investigation could wait. Jason was missing, and there was now a very real possibility that he was somewhere beneath Sum.
Marcus left with Mr. Sun. Before leaving my room, he stood beside my bed and looked at me. "We'll find him."
"I know."
"That's supposed to be the part where you say thank you."
"I'll thank you when you bring my husband back."
He smiled faintly. "There's the Amber I know."
I caught his wrist before he could move away. "Marcus." The smile disappeared from his face. "Bring him home."
His expression softened. "I will."
Then he was gone. I stared at the closed door for several seconds before Mrs. Sun came beside me and squeezed my shoulder. Neither of us said anything. There wasn't anything left to say. We needed to find Jason.
The Ember Association answered my call immediately. By then, I'd given up pretending my hospital room was anything other than a command center. There were laptops everywhere, charging cables running across tables, maps on screens, military personnel outside the secured floor, and enough private security throughout the building to make attacking the hospital an exceptionally stupid idea. Jasmine remained near the door. She'd appointed herself my protection detail and apparently intended to take that position to the grave. Grandpa sat beside one of the windows, Pamela had three screens open, and I was in the middle of all of it.
In bed.
As ordered.
I considered that personal growth.
When representatives from the Ember Association appeared on the secure video call, I didn't waste time. "I need everything you have on the mines."
"We anticipated that," one of the older members said.
A file appeared, and Pamela immediately downloaded it to an isolated system. Maps began opening across the screen, but they weren't modern maps. Some had clearly been copied from documents that had existed long before River City was what it was today. I stared at the network of lines stretching beneath Sum.
"Those are all tunnels?"
"Not exactly. Some are natural cave systems. Others were expanded into mines. Some became transportation routes between Ember-controlled sites."
"How far do they go?"
The woman hesitated. "Farther than the modern maps suggest."
