Amber POV

Alexander didn’t even bother saying goodbye.

One second, his team was standing with Jasmine and the others, and the next, the four of them had disappeared into the darkness of the forest, heading straight toward the beach.

Jason was the first one to break the silence.

“He’s insane.”

“No argument there,” Jasmine replied.

Daniel sighed. “We’re really letting Alexander Vincent walk into a massacre because he asked nicely.”

“He didn’t ask nicely,” Noah corrected. “He negotiated.”

“That’s somehow worse.”

Mr. Stait cleared his throat from the screen in front of me.

“Amber, don’t close this call.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“I’m requesting an emergency meeting with the other countries’ representatives. The Secretary of Defense from

Sum already contacted several governments, but we need everyone in the same room.”

I nodded and adjusted the phone against the remains of the dismantled computer.

“Fine.”

The old man typed furiously on another screen while military officers ran behind him.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I said the thing that had been bothering me for hours.

“Mr. Stait, I don’t think Alexander came to this island for the competition.”

That got his attention immediately.

“What do you mean?”

I glanced at the map.

“He’s looking for something.”

“Or someone?”

I nodded.

“Ever since this started, he’s been disappearing from the satellite feed. His movements don’t match anyone else’s. He wasn’t interested in the flags, he wasn’t interested in the command centers, and even now, he volunteered to go to the beach when every sane person is running away from it.”

Mr. Stait leaned back in his chair.

“You think whatever he’s looking for is interfering with his plans?”

“And you believe it has something to do with the island?”

“I think that’s why he’s here.”

Before Mr. Stait could answer, he suddenly frowned.

“Amber, what’s behind you?”

I turned around.

Behind the desks and the emergency batteries was a metal cabinet labeled EMERGENCY SUPPLIES.

“Food, water, blankets…”

“No, behind it.”

I walked closer.

Hidden behind the shelves, partially concealed by shadows, was a thick steel door.

“What the hell?”

One of the guards approached.

“That wasn’t on the map.”

I pulled the cabinet aside and found a heavy latch.

The door groaned as I opened it.

A cold gust of air hit my face.

Stone stairs descended into darkness.

An emergency exit.

“Well, that’s comforting,” I muttered.

Then I heard it.

Soft crying.

I froze.

The guards exchanged glances.

“Did you hear that?” I whispered.

The crying came again.

Faint.

Far away.

But unmistakably human.

One of the guards stepped forward.

We should investigate.”

I shook my head immediately.

“No.”

“Amber-”

“We don’t know what’s down there.”

I looked at the darkness stretching beneath us.

“We wait for the others.”

Just then, footsteps echoed from outside the cave.

Weapons were raised instantly.

“Relax!” a familiar voice shouted.

Emory.

He entered the cave, breathing heavily.

Unlike the others, he had only left two hours before the explosions and hadn’t gone nearly as far into the forest.

The moment he saw my face, he frowned.

“What happened?”

I pointed toward the open door.

“We found something.”

Emory walked over and looked down the staircase.

“What is this?”

“An emergency exit.”

“And we heard crying.”

He didn’t hesitate for even a second.

“I’m going down.”

“Emory-”

He turned toward the two defense specialists guarding the cave.

“You two, with me.”

One of them blinked.

“You’re not even asking?”

“No.”

The medic grabbed a flashlight.

(someone’s down there, we’re wasting time.”

Before I could argue, the three of them disappeared into the darkness.

The cave suddenly felt much emptier.

Mr. Stait had gone completely silent on the screen.

Ten minutes passed.

Then fifteen.

And finally, footsteps echoed from below.

Emory emerged first.

He looked pale.

And furious.

The moment he stepped into the light, I knew whatever he had seen was bad.

“What happened?” I asked.

He stared at me for several seconds before answering.

“There are women down there.”

The cave fell silent.

“What?”

“There are women hidden beneath the island.”

Mr. Stait stood up so quickly that his chair crashed behind him.

“How many?”

“At least six.”

I felt my blood run cold.

Emory ran a hand through his hair.

“The place…” He swallowed. “Amber, the description matches the last location Elizabeth Vincent said she remembered.”

For a moment, neither of us breathed. 1

Elizabeth Vincent.

The woman who had disappeared.

The woman whose memories had ended in darkness and stone walls.

“No…” I whispered.

Emory looked sick.

“They’re being hidden down there.”

Nlowly sat down.

Suddenly, everything we thought we knew no longer made sense.

Either Alexander Vincent was working with the island owner…

Or we had been wrong about him from the very beginning.

Mr. Stait’s voice broke the silence.

“Tell me everything.”

Emory nodded.

“I brought them water.”

“What did they say?”

The medic looked at us, horrified.

“They escaped.”

A chill ran down my spine.

“Escaped from what?”

He took a deep breath.

“From the hunting grounds.”

Nobody spoke.

“The women said that people are brought to the island and hunted.”

One of the guards swore under his breath.

“They found a hatch near the ocean and climbed until they reached the emergency exit.”

I shook my head.

“No, no, that’s impossible-”

“Amber.” Emory’s voice cracked. “They believe they’re the prey.”

The room spun.

Mr. Stait had gone completely white.

“Who are they?”

“Six women.”

“And?”

Emory stared at me.

“And a boy.”

A knot formed in my stomach.

How old?”

“Eleven.”

The entire cave fell silent.

“And his name?”

Emory looked down at the bottle of water still clutched in his hand.

“He says his name is Oliver Vincent.”

For the first time that night, I completely forgot about the explosions, the massacre, and the missing Evermore

teams.

Because there was only one question left in my mind.

Why was an eleven-year-old Vincent hidden beneath an island where people

Amber POV

For several minutes after Etnory revealed Oliver’s name, nobody in the cave spoke.

Mr. Stait was the first to recover.

“Amber, are you absolutely certain there’s an exit leading to the ocean?”

I looked back at the open steel door, at the staircase disappearing into darkness.

“We haven’t reached the end yet, but according to the women, they escaped through a hatch by the sea.”

Mr. Stait immediately turned to someone off-screen.

“Get the naval maps. Every cave system, every natural entrance, every underground current around that island. Now.”

The officers behind him scattered.

He turned back to me.

“Show me the coordinates.”

I pulled the map onto my phone and marked the location of the cave and the emergency tunnel.

Mr. Stait studied it for a few seconds.

“If the exit is accessible, I can have a boat there in approximately twelve hours.”

“Twelve hours?” Jasmine shouted from somewhere outside the cave.

Mr. Stait grimaced.

“It’s the fastest option. Everything closer belongs to the island owner. We’d have to mobilize military vessels from the mainland.”

Twelve hours.

Under normal circumstances, that wasn’t much.

On an island where people were being hunted, it felt like an eternity.

“We’ll hold out,” I said.

Mr. Stait nodded.

“Keep everyone hidden.”

As if the universe had decided that one terrifying revelation wasn’t enough for the night, voices suddenly echoed from outside.

Dozens of them.

Jasmine burst into the cave first.

“We made it!”

Behind her came Noah, Daniel, Franklin, Jason, and dozens of exhausted soldiers from seven different countries.

The cave, which had felt enormous just minutes ago, suddenly became overcrowded.

eyes immediately found Jason.

For a second, neither of us moved.

Then he crossed the distance between us in three long steps and wrapped his arms around me.

I buried my face in his chest.

For the first time since the explosions had started, I allowed myself to breathe.

“You’re okay,” he whispered.

“Apparently.”

He pulled back just enough to look at me.

“You look terrible.”

I stared at his dirt-covered face and raised an eyebrow.

“That’s rich coming from you.”

Franklin walked past us, coughing loudly.

“Some of us are traumatized and single. Please stop being adorable.”

Jasmine nodded.

“Şeriously. Read the room.”

Jason rolled his eyes and kissed my forehead anyway.

“You scared me.”

“I spent nineteen minutes thinking you were dead.”

He smiled softly.

“Same.”

For a moment, the island disappeared.

There were no explosions.

No massacres.

Just Jason’s heartbeat against my cheek.

Unfortunately, reality returned quickly.

“Amber!” Franklin shouted.

I sighed.

“See? The universe hates romance.”

Jason laughed and reluctantly let me go.

“First, we need to find Alexander.”

Jasmine frowned.

“You think he made it to the beach?”
