Military Chaos

Amber POV

The military SUV arrived just after sunrise.

I kissed Alice and Alex goodbye one last time before stepping out of the castle, my bag hanging from one shoulder.

Jason stood beside me, one hand resting on my lower back

“Call me when you arrive.”

I smiled.

“You’re saying that as if I’m going to war.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“Knowing your luck, that’s still a possibility.”

“Comforting.”

He kissed my forehead before opening the door for me.

As I climbed into the vehicle, something caught my attention.

A white SUV was parked near the outer wall of the castle, partially hidden behind a row of trees.

It was too far away to recognize the driver, but close enough to make my stomach twist.

“Jason.”

He immediately followed my gaze.

“I see it.”

“Do you think-”

“I don’t know.”

His expression darkened.

“But they’re trying very hard not to be seen.”

Emory leaned out of the driver’s seat.

“We’ve already had people watching them since dawn.”

I blinked.

“You knew?”

Mr. Stait laughed from the passenger seat.

“Amber, after someone tried to blow up your plane, we don’t exactly leave things to chance anymore.”

That was reassuring.

Only slightly terrifying, but reassuring.

Jason squeezed my hand.

Be careful.”

“You too.”

For a brief moment, neither of us moved.

Then Emory cleared his throat dramatically.

“If the married couple is done acting like they’re in a romance movie, we have a six-hour drive ahead of us.”

I rolled my eyes and climbed into the SUV.

The first hour passed quietly.

Mr. Stait reviewed files while Emory drove, occasionally pointing out military checkpoints along the road.

I was halfway through reading the competition rules when the SUV stopped in front of a small bus station.

A girl climbed inside.

She couldn’t have been older than eighteen.

She wore black cargo pants, black boots, and a black jacket despite the heat outside.

At first glance, she looked delicate, almost fragile.

At second glance, she looked terrifying.

The kind of terrifying that came from absolute confidence.

Her dark eyes immediately scanned the vehicle before landing on me.

“You’re Amber?”

I nodded.

“Jasmine?”

She smirked.

“The pregnant billionaire. Nice to meet you.”

I laughed.

“Likewise.”

Without another word, she sat beside the window and crossed her arms.

Dangerous.

That was the first word that came to mind.

Dangerous and incredibly young.

Thirty minutes later, we stopped again.

This time, a man wearing sunglasses climbed inside.

I almost choked.

Wait.”

He removed his glasses and smiled politely.

“Please don’t tell me you recognized me from those terrible tabloids.”

I stared at him.

“Daniel Jones?”

The actor laughed.

“Guilty.”

He couldn’t have been older than twenty-six.

Every entertainment magazine in the country had written about him at some point.

Yet, somehow, here he was, boarding a military vehicle.

“I have so many questions.”

“You’ll have to wait until we’re officially teammates.”

Before I could answer, Emory stopped one last time.

The final passenger stepped inside.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and carried himself with the kind of balance that immediately told me he was dangerous.

Not flashy.

Not intimidating.

Just dangerous.

He couldn’t have been older than thirty.

His eyes swept through the SUV before he nodded politely.

“Noah.”

Jasmine immediately moved her backpack off the seat next to her.

He sat down silently.

The atmosphere inside the vehicle shifted.

Jasmine looked dangerous.

Noah looked lethal.

An hour later, Mr. Stait finally turned around in his seat.

“Since all four of you are here, I might as well explain why I picked you up personally.”

Daniel straightened immediately.

“You’ve already assigned teams?”

Mr. Stait nodded.

“Not officially.”

Jasmine frowned.

“Then why are we together?”

“Because I want the four of you on the same team.”

Nobody objected.

That surprised me.

Daniel shrugged.

“Works for me.”

Jasmine simply nodded.

Noah crossed his arms.

“No complaints.”

Mr. Stait smiled.

“Good.”

He opened a folder and continued.

“Eight countries are participating.”

“Each country will send four teams.”

I quickly did the math.

“That’s thirty-two teams.”

“Correct.”

“And each team has four members.”

Mr. Stait nodded.

“A medic.”

Daniel raised his hand.

“That’s me.”

“A digital specialist who will act as guide and strategist.”

Everyone looked at me.

I sighed.

“Apparently, that’s me.”

“An offense specialist.”

Jasmine smiled.

“My favorite role.”

“And finally, defense.”

Noah simply nodded.

Emory laughed.

“You four are going to be interesting.”

Mr. Stait pointed at me.

“Introductions.”

I sighed dramatically.

“Fine.”

I straightened in my seat.

“Amber Asher. Businesswoman, analyst, accidental military recruit, four months pregnant.”

Daniel laughed.

“That’s certainly an introduction.”

Jasmine smirked.

“At least you’re honest.”

She leaned forward.

“Jasmine Park. Combat specialist.”

“You mean offense specialist?” Daniel asked.

She smiled sweetly. 1

“I mean offense specialist.”

For some reason, that answer terrified me.

Noah spoke next.

“Noah Reyes. Martial artist. Defense.”

Short.
