Behind the computer
Amber POV
Two days after we returned to Sum, my phone rang while I was going through the twins’ medical appointments.
I didn’t even need to look at the screen.
“Mr. Stait?”
“Good morning, Amber.”
I smiled and put the tablet aside.
“Please tell me you’re finally calling with instructions. Jason volunteered me before even asking if I wanted to join.
Mr. Stait laughed on the other side of the line.
“He was surprisingly enthusiastic.”
“Of course he was. He gets to sit comfortably in his office while I get recruited by the military.”
“I’m sure he would disagree with that description.”
I narrowed my eyes, immediately suspicious.
“That’s exactly the kind of answer that makes me think he’s hiding something.”
Mr. Stait chuckled.
“Maybe.”
I sat back in my chair.
“So, what are my orders?”
“There will be an international reconnaissance exercise in the Pacific. The best candidates from each allied
country will participate.”
“A military exercise?”
“Think of it as an oversized game of capture the flag.”
“That sounds suspiciously dangerous.”
“It is.”
I sighed.
“Go on.”

“The teams will be deployed across an abandoned island. Their objective is to gather intelligence, locate strategic positions, avoid enemy patrols, and recover targets hidden across the island.”
“And my role?”
“You’ll remain at headquarters.”
I instinctively placed a hand over my stomach.

“Good answer.”
You’re four months pregnant, Amber. You’re not setting foot on that island.”
“So I’ll be behind a computer?”
“Exactly. Analysis, satellite imagery, communication, strategy.”
I smiled.
“So, the fun part.”
“That’s one way to describe it.”
There was a brief silence before Mr. Stait added casually, “It’s possible that Jason was already recruited by Sum military years ago.”
I nearly dropped my phone.
“What?”
“We’re not completely sure, but there are records suggesting he participated in several operations.”
“And he never thought to mention that to his wife?”
“Apparently not.”
I looked toward Jason’s office.

The man had survived bomb attempts, international scandals, custody battles, and somehow still managed to keep secrets from me.
A smile slowly spread across my face.
“If he’s participating too, this is going to be much more entertaining.”
Mr. Stait laughed.
“I had a feeling you’d say that.”
“When do I leave?”
“The day after tomorrow.”
“Finally.”
“You already accepted the mission two weeks ago, Amber. You’ve been impatiently waiting for instructions ever since.”
“That’s because your military has an unhealthy obsession with suspense.”
“We prefer to call it operational secrecy.”
“Same thing.”
The rest of the day, I focused on organizing everything for the children.
Mrs. Sun immediately volunteered to stay at the castle.
Grandfather Asher announced that he would practically move in until I returned.

Marcus increased security around the estate.
Emory promised that the base was safer than most capitals.
Meanwhile, I had a much more important mission.
Finding evidence that my husband was secretly going to that island.
I found maps spread across his office desk.
“Planning to invade a neighboring country?”
Jason didn’t even look up.
“New shipping routes.”
Suspicious.
Later, I caught him reviewing weather reports for the Pacific.
“Interesting weather for someone who supposedly has no plans to leave Sum.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“Business trip.’
“Business trips usually don’t involve satellite maps.”
“Depends on the business.”
The man was infuriating.
That night, while he showered, I shamelessly searched through his desk.
Financial reports.
Contracts.
A notebook filled with numbers.
Nothing military.
Absolutely nothing.
“Most wives knock before conducting an investigation.”
I jumped and quickly closed the drawer.
“I wasn’t investigating.”
Jason crossed his arms.
“Oh?”
“I was auditing your office.”
He laughed.
“And what did the audit reveal?”

I smiled innocently.
That my husband is suspicious.”
He kissed my forehead.
“You’re imagining things.”
“That’s exactly what a guilty person would say.”
He laughed but never denied it.
Which only made me more suspicious.
Two days later, I stood outside the castle entrance with my bags ready.
Alice wrapped her arms around my waist.
“You’re coming back soon, right?”
I kissed her forehead.
“Very soon.”
Alex looked at me seriously.
“Will you really just be behind a computer?”
“That’s the plan.”
He narrowed his eyes. 1
