Volunteered my wife

Jason POV

An international military competition had been the last thing on my mind.

The president himself had called me two weeks earlier.

It hadn’t been an order.

It had been a favor.

“Sum needs its best people.”

That was what he had said.

Of course, I had tried to refuse.

I had a company to run, a wife who was four months pregnant, two children who had nearly died in a plane explosion, and an international scandal following my family.

Apparently, none of those reasons mattered.

“The country needs you.”

I hated when politicians used that sentence.

So I had accepted.

The moment Mr. Stait told me that he had a job for me, I immediately thought it had something to do with the plane, the trafficking investigation, or the people who had tried to kill my family, I hadn’t even considered that it could be the same competition.

Honestly, I had suggested Amber mostly because she was restless.

For two days, she had been wandering around the castle, reorganizing documents, redesigning school schedules, and terrifying the accounting department with “small improvements.”

Keeping Amber busy was practically a public service.

Then, two days ago, I saw Mr. Stait’s SUV arriving at the castle.

And Amber climbing inside.

That was the moment I realized my mistake.

She was competing too.

And I had lied to her.

Not because I wanted to deceive her, but because I didn’t want her to worry.

Now, sitting in my office, I was significantly more worried about Amber’s reaction when she discovered the truth than about the competition itself.

At least I had one advantage.

I knew almost every military player in River City.

And, according to the information I had received, Amber would remain behind a computer in the command center.

away from the actual field exercise.

Hopefully.

The sound of an engine outside interrupted my thoughts.

I walked toward the window and immediately recognized the white SUV parked in front of the castle

The president stepped out.

Of course.

Because apparently, my life couldn’t be normal for even a single week.

Behind him emerged another man in his fifties, dressed in military uniform.

The president smiled as soon as he saw me.

“Mr. Jason Sun.”

“Mr. President.”

He shook my hand.

“I hope you’re ready.”

“That depends entirely on what you mean by ready.”

He laughed.

“Good answer.”

The man beside him stepped forward.

“Greg Peterson. Secretary of Defense.”

We shook hands.

“Nice to meet you.”

Peterson nodded.

“Likewise. We have a lot to discuss.”

A few minutes later, we were sitting at the Sums military conference room.

The president placed several files on the table.

“We’ve assigned your team.”

I opened the first folder.

Three generals.

Three people who, somehow, expected me to lead them.

Peterson sat across from me.

“We’d like you to act as the guide and strategist.”

Rooked up.

“You want me to direct three generals?”

The president smiled.

“We’re asking you to direct one team.”

“That’s somehow worse.”

Peterson laughed.

He made a call and fifteen minutes later, my team was sitting down.

“Let’s start with introductions.”

He pointed toward the woman sitting to my right.

“General Elena Vasquez. Defense specialist.”

She looked to be in her early thirties, athletic, with short black hair and the expression of someone who had broken bones professionally.

She crossed her arms.

“I protect people.”

“Good to know.”

Peterson pointed toward the man across from me.

“General Samuel Carter. Medic.”

He looked to be around forty, calm and collected.

“I’ll try to keep everyone alive.”

“A comforting goal.”

The last man smiled.

“General Marcus Reed.”

He couldn’t have been older than thirty-five.

“Offense specialist.”

Elena immediately rolled her eyes.

“Translation: he enjoys explosions.”

Marcus shrugged.

“Explosions solve many problems.”

I leaned back in my chair, this was going to be a long day.

We were taking to the briefing room, were the other three teams were allready waiting.

My team members were joking and laughing, nothing like the generals I was accustomed at the River City base.

m starting to think Amber would get along with all of you.”

Peterson smiled. 1

“Speaking of your wife…”

That sentence immediately worried me.

He stood and addressed not only us, but the other three teams.

“Eight countries are participating.”

The room fell silent.

“Each country will send four teams.”

A map appeared on the screen.

Peterson pointed toward Starlite. 1

“Alexander Vincent will participate as Starlite’s offense specialist.”

The entire room exchanged glances.

I frowned.

“Alexander?”

Peterson nodded.

“He specifically requested the position.”

Interesting.

Very interesting.

The president crossed his arms.

“Starlite considers this competition politically important.”

Peterson looked directly at me.

“At the moment, we consider two participants to be the greatest threats.”

The screen changed.

Amber’s photograph appeared on the left.

Alexander’s on the right.

I nearly laughed.

“My pregnant wife is considered one of your greatest rivals?”

Peterson stared at me.

1

“Jason, your pregnant wife created a financial algorithm that exposed three shell corporations in less than an hour.”

“She also hacked into a private network to save your children.”

frankly, we’re more afraid of Amber than we are of Alexander.”

The entire room laughed.

I shook my head.

“She’ll never let me hear the end of this.”

“Probably not.”

Peterson narrowed his eyes.

“Actually, we didn’t even contact Amber at first.”

I blinked.

“What?”

“She’s pregnant.”

“Naturally, we assumed she wouldn’t participate.”

The president snorted.

“Then Mr. Stait informed us that Jason Sun had volunteered his wife for military duty.”

The entire room turned toward me.

I immediately raised both hands.

“In my defense, I didn’t know it was this competition.”

Elena laughed.

“So, let me get this straight.”

“You accidentally volunteered your pregnant billionaire wife for an international military showdown?”

“When you say it like that, it sounds bad.”

Marcus burst out laughing.

“When do you think she’ll find out you’re competing too?”

I leaned back in my chair and stared at the ceiling.

1

Honestly?

I wasn’t afraid of thirty-one enemy teams.

I wasn’t afraid of Alexander Vincent.

I wasn’t even afraid of losing the competition.

I was afraid of Amber Asher discovering that I had lied to her.

Because surviving an international military exercise sounded significantly easier than surviving my wife’s anger.

He’s dead

Amber POV

The four teams from River City had been trapped inside the military auditorium for almost two hours.

Apparently, “waiting for assignments” in military language meant “stand around and socialize while people in another room decide your fate.””

Jasmine had disappeared somewhere fifteen minutes earlier, Noah was quietly reading through the competition rules, and Daniel had somehow managed to gather a crowd around him simply by existing.

Meanwhile, I was wandering around the auditorium when I recognized a familiar group near the coffee machines.

John.

And several of the soldiers Jason had introduced me to at the bar months ago.

“Amber!”

John walked over and hugged me carefully, avoiding my stomach.

“Is my boy here too?”

I laughed.

“Nope. Sum recruited him first.”

That immediately caught everyone’s attention.

“He what?”

7

“He was still trying to hide it from me when I left the castle, but I’m pretty sure he’ll be representing Sum.”

The entire group burst into laughter.

“Poor Jason.”

“He’s more afraid of your reaction than of the competition.”

“Honestly, that’s reasonable.”

I shook my head.

“He should know by now that I’ll figure it out eventually.”

One of the technicians who had helped Alex locate the missing teenagers raised his hand.

1

“We should recruit Alex next year.”

Another man immediately smacked the back of his head.

“There’s an age restriction, genius.”

“Right. Nobody under eighteen.”

I laughed.

“My son is six years old.”

“Details.”

Besides,” I added, “Alex shouldn’t be exposed to this kind of stress.”

The technician nodded seriously.

“Fair.”

I crossed my arms.

“He also has classes.”

That earned me several confused looks.

At that exact moment, Jasmine appeared beside us.

She raised an eyebrow.

“Wait, you’re more concerned about his classes than the possibility of him joining the military?”

I chuckled.

“Honestly? If he were here with me, at least I would know he was safe.”

Jasmine blinked.

“That’s not the answer I expected.”

I shrugged.

“I wouldn’t actually have a problem with either of my kids participating, provided they stayed in the same room

as me.”

Daniel, who had joined us at some point, laughed.

“That sounds incredibly unhealthy.”

I pointed toward the giant screen hanging above the stage.

“This exercise is supposed to happen without casualties, right?”

“That’s the idea,” Noah replied.

“Then I’d probably worry more if they skipped school.”
