A teacher for emotions

Amber POV

The moment the boat reached the shore, Marcus jumped out first, helping Alex onto the dock before offering me his hand.

Jason was already scanning our surroundings.

“Clear.”

We hurried toward the unmarked car we had hidden among the trees before leaving for the island

Marcus took the driver’s seat before Jason could reach the door.

“I’ll drive.”

Jason frowned.

“I can.”

Marcus looked at him through the rearview mirror.

“No.”

He spoke calmly, but there was no room for argument.

“Alex needs both of you right now.”

Jason looked at our son for only a second before nodding.

He climbed into the back seat beside me.

Alex sat between us.

He wasn’t crying.

He wasn’t shaking.

He wasn’t even looking out the window.

He simply sat there.

Silent.

His little hands rested in his lap, motionless.

I would have preferred tears.

The silence scared me far more.

The drive began.

No one spoke.

Every few minutes Jason gently rubbed Alex’s back, while I kept one hand wrapped around his small fingers.

Twenty minutes passed before any of us finally allowed ourselves to believe we had escaped.

The island was far behind us now.

No one appeared to be following.

Alex remained completely silent.

Almost an hour after leaving the island, I noticed a change.

His breathing.

Until then it had been shallow and uneven, as though he had forgotten how to breathe, properly.

Slowly…

Very slowly…

It became steadier.

The castle gates opened.

Marcus drove through without stopping.

The moment the car came to a halt in front of the entrance…

Alex broke.

He threw himself against Jason and began sobbing.

Great, heartbreaking sobs that shook his entire body.

Jason wrapped both arms around him.

“I’ve got you.”

“I’ve got you.”

I held them both, gently stroking Alex’s hair.

“You did such a good job.”

“You were so brave.”

Jason nodded.

“You listened.”

“You stayed calm.”

“You helped us find you.”

He gently lifted Alex’s chin until they were looking at each other.

“This wasn’t your fault.”

“Do you understand me?”

Alex nodded through his tears.

“But…”

“I left school.”

exchanged a glance with Jason.

“Can you tell us why?”

Alex sniffled.

“My driver sent me a message.”

Jason frowned.

“What did it say?”

“He said there were too many cars outside the school.”

“He asked me to walk around the corner because everyone was waiting by the car.”

My stomach dropped.

Jason immediately called his grandfather.

“Hey, yes, we’ve got him, but there is a situation”

“Where’s the driver?”

Mr. Sun answered almost instantly.

“We’ve been looking for him.”

Jason put the call on speaker.

“We checked every company phone.”

“Every message.”

“Every communication log.”

“There isn’t a single message telling Alex to leave the school.”

Jason looked at Alex.

“What about the girls?”

“The driver picked them up normally.”

Mr. Sun’s voice grew darker.

“He disappeared afterward.”

“We still haven’t found him.”

The call ended.

Jason turned back toward Alex.

“Listen carefully.”

Alex looked up.
