The coldness in his voice made Susanna's heart plummet. She stared at him, utterly paralyzed.
"Yardley..."
"Let me remind you of the reality of our arrangement," Yardley said, his gaze piercing her. He hated needy, demanding women. He was busy enough without having to deal with her tantrums.
Before he arrived, Susanna had foolishly believed her desperate act would force him to reassure her, to put her above his political marriage. She couldn't have been more wrong.
He stepped closer, his fingers clamping down on her chin. "Know your place, Susanna. Understand?"
Every word dripped with ice. It was as if he had never felt a shred of affection for her.
Susanna struggled to breathe around the lump in her throat. "What if I don't want this place anymore?"
What place was he even talking about? He had forced this upon her. His overbearing nature had tricked her into thinking she meant something to him. Now she saw the truth. To him, she was nothing more than a convenient plaything. The Merlins represented power and a strategic alliance. Her little stunt had threatened his peace of mind, so he was putting her back in her box.
He wasn't like Fairfax. For all his flaws, Fairfax had constantly tried to appease Starla, torn by his genuine feelings for her. Yardley just demanded compliance. Once he married Jane Merlin, Susanna's position would be nothing short of a humiliating joke.
"You don't have the luxury of choice," Yardley stated flatly, his eyes devoid of warmth.
