Yardley called Starla the second he hung up with Garret.
"You lied to me?" he snarled into the receiver.
"Didn't you play me before too?" Starla's voice dripped with the smug relief of a successful trap.
Yardley erupted. "Do you have any idea how bad your timing is?"
"Why is it bad? When you pulled your stunts, you always thought the timing was just fine, didn't you?"
He had forced her hand back then, completely ignoring her refusals.
"What? Whatever you do is perfectly acceptable, but when I do it, it's out of line?"
"Fairfax is missing. You—"
"I don't care if he lives or dies!"
She knew Yardley was about to lecture her on Fairfax's disappearance. By leading him to believe Fairfax was in their father's custody, she had deliberately clouded his judgment. Sure, it might have put Fairfax in real danger, but she couldn't care less.
"You..." Yardley ground his teeth. "Do you think just because the paperwork is signed, everything is yours? I can transfer those properties, and I can take them right back!"
"You'll have to see if Dad's people let you," she challenged.
Silence hung heavy on the line. Yardley's breathing turned ragged.
