Chapter 651

HELEN

The doorbell rang in the early hours of the afternoon, pulling me out of sleep. I hadn’t been able to go back to sleep last night until this morning. I didn’t even realize when I slept off until I heard the doorbell.

I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling for a moment, wondering who could possibly be at the door at that hour. I wasn’t expecting anyone. The bell rang again, and I slowly pushed myself out of bed.

My body felt heavier than usual, and I had to pause for a moment before forcing myself to stand. I walked into the bathroom, washed my face, and looked at myself in the mirror.

I looked tired.

More tired than I wanted to admit.

I reached for my medicine and took a dose with some water before leaving the bathroom. Whoever was at the door, I couldn’t possibly answer it looking like I had barely managed to get out of bed.

By the time I reached the staircase, the doorbell rang again.

I slowly made my way downstairs and stopped before reaching the entrance. I glanced through the curtain and saw a woman standing outside with her back to the door.

I frowned.

I couldn’t see her face, and I didn’t recognize her from the way she was dressed.

I hesitated for another moment before finally opening the door.

“Hello.”

The woman turned around.

I froze.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

I knew that face. Even after all these years, I knew it.

My mother.

Seraphine stood there, looking at me as though she hadn’t just appeared at my doorstep after decades of silence.

I knew she found me, but I hadn’t expected her to show up literally the next day.

She studied my face for a moment before raising an eyebrow.

“Are you not going to invite me in?”

I didn’t answer. I simply stepped aside. She walked past me and entered the house without another word.

I closed the door slowly behind her.

“You found me,” I said.

She glanced around the room.

“A basic location spell did the job.”

I stared at her.

She looked back at me with mild disappointment.

“How detached have you become from your roots that you don’t even remember something that simple?”

I said nothing.

Instead, I turned away and walked toward the sitting room. I lowered myself onto the sofa, suddenly too tired to remain standing.

I had barely settled when a cough rose in my throat.

I covered my mouth with my handkerchief and turned away as I coughed again. The pain in my chest made me close my eyes.

When it finally passed, I lowered the handkerchief.

There was blood on it.

I quickly folded it in my hand before my mother could see.

But when I looked up, I found her eyes fixed on me.

She had seen it. Of course she had.

Seraphine walked over and sat beside me. For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she reached for my face and gently held it between her hands. Her eyes searched mine,

and something in her expression softened.

“My poor child,” she said quietly. “What have you done to yourself?”

Something about those words made me pull away.

I looked at her.

“What are you doing here?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

I studied her face. My mother was many things, but sentimental wasn’t one of them. She was proud, disciplined, and far too accustomed to keeping her emotions under control.

She wouldn’t have crossed all that distance simply because she suddenly wanted to see me.

There had to be a reason.

“You knew I was sick,” I said.

She remained silent. That was the confirmation I needed.

“How?”

I slowly stood. My legs felt weak beneath me, but I ignored it.

“You haven’t seen me in decades. You haven’t spoken to me in decades. So how could you possibly know what is happening to me?”

I watched her carefully.

My mother had always known things she shouldn’t have been able to know.

And if she had somehow discovered that I was dying, there was only one explanation I could

think of.

Before I could ask again, she finally spoke.

“The moment I knew you were dying, I had to come and see for myself.”

I stared at her.

“Dying?”

The word sounded strange coming from her.

I swallowed.

“How did you know that?”

She looked away for a moment before returning her attention to me.

“After

you left, I took certain measures.”

Her voice was calm, almost detached, but I knew her well enough to hear what was underneath it.

“I needed to know that you were alive.”

I said nothing.

She continued.

“So I created a connection between you and something that would remain with me. Something that would tell me when your life was well and when it wasn’t.”

My heart tightened.
