The question left my mouth the moment Faye finished speaking. I had been listening to her from behind my desk, only half expecting the conversation to turn serious.

She had called me, sharing some of the things that had been happening in Silver Hollow, and judging by the tone of her voice, I already knew she had something important to tell me.

There was a short silence on the other end of the call.

“I mean exactly what I said,” Faye replied. “North Ridge might be going to war against Silver Hollow.”

I leaned back slightly in my chair.

“Because of a business transaction?” I asked.

“Because of a failed business transaction,” she corrected. “Alpha Conrad is threatening

Jason over it.”

I stared at the empty space in front of me.

“I see.”

The words came out slowly as I processed what she had just told me.

Almost immediately, something clicked in my mind.

The last regional council meeting.

I remembered Conrad’s comments from that day. He had spoken with a level of irritation that had seemed unusual even for him, making several remarks about another pack failing to meet an obligation and warning that there would be consequences if the matter wasn’t resolved. He hadn’t mentioned Silver Hollow directly, and at the time, I hadn’t been able to determine exactly who he was referring to.

Now I understood.

So that had been what Conrad was talking about.

I also remembered Jason during that meeting.

Jason’s attitude had been unusually measured. He had spoken about the importance of communication between packs and had seemed far more reasonable than I was accustomed to seeing him. I had actually wondered what had brought about the sudden change.

Apparently, there had been a good reason.

Conrad and Jason already had a personal issue between them.

I almost smiled at the realization, even though it wasn’t funny.

It explained more than I had expected.

“What happened with the shipment exactly?” I asked.

Faye began explaining the situation in greater detail.

Silver Hollow had an agreement with North Ridge to deliver several shipments. North Ridge had already paid for the goods, but the shipments had disappeared somewhere along the way. No one in Silver Hollow had been able to account for them, and the problem hadn’t happened only once.

Conrad had given Jason time to resolve the matter and recover the missing goods, but the shipments hadn’t been found.

Then the situation had become even worse.

Conrad had apparently stopped treating it as a simple failed transaction. He believed Silver Hollow had deliberately played him, and according to Faye, he had made it clear that he intended to teach the pack a lesson.

I listened quietly as she explained.

The more I heard, the less the situation sounded like a genuine dispute over a failed delivery.

I leaned back in my chair and allowed myself a small, humorless chuckle.

“Since when does a failed delivery lead to war between packs?” I asked.

Faye didn’t answer. I wasn’t expecting an answer anyway.

I continued, “Especially when the party that failed to deliver is willing to negotiate with the person who paid for it?”

That was the part I couldn’t understand.
