Chapter 636
ALEXANDER
When I woke up, the first thing I noticed was the pain.

My head was aching badly enough that I kept my eyes closed for several seconds, hoping the pounding would ease if I didn’t move. Unfortunately, it didn’t. The moment I shifted my head, another sharp ache travelled from the back of my skull down into my neck.
I groaned quietly.
Then I remembered where I was.
I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling above me. For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand why I was lying on the couch instead of in my bed. Then the events of the previous night slowly returned to me.
Cole.
The beer.
The conversation.
I turned my head carefully and immediately regretted it. My neck protested, and I winced before rubbing the back of it with one hand.
I looked across the room and saw that Cole was still asleep on the other couch.
Of course he was.
He had somehow managed to make himself comfortable despite the fact that neither of us had intended to spend the night sleeping there. One of his arms was hanging over the edge of the couch, and his head was tilted awkwardly against the backrest.
I stared at him for a moment. Then I looked down at myself.
I was still wearing the clothes from the previous night, and judging by the stiffness in my shoulders and the dull pain in my neck, my body had no intention of forgiving me for the position I had slept in.
I rubbed both hands down my face and sighed.
This was one of the reasons why I chose my drinks carefully. I never got used to the mess that followed.

I slowly pushed myself upright and sat there for a moment, waiting for my head to adjust to the movement. The room seemed perfectly steady, but the pounding in my skull remained.
I checked my watch, then glanced at Cole again. He hadn’t moved. I considered waking him, but then I decided against it.
He was responsible for at least half the reason I was in this condition, but I had willingly accepted the bottle eventually. There was no point blaming him for something I had participated in.
Besides, I was far more interested in getting rid of the headache than arguing with him about
I stood carefully.
My neck tightened immediately. I rolled my shoulders once, then stopped when another ache travelled down my back.
“Great,” I muttered.
I walked into the bedroom and closed the door behind me.
The familiar quiet of my room felt different after spending the night on the couch. I stood beside the bed for a moment and looked at it.
I should have been sleeping there.
Instead, I had spent the night folded into a couch like someone who had never seen a proper
bed before.
I tried to roll my eyes, then ended up regretting it. I removed my clothes before heading into
the bathroom.
The cold water helped. Not immediately, but enough.
I stood beneath the shower for several minutes, letting the water run over my head and shoulders. I kept my eyes closed as I tried to clear my thoughts.
The headache didn’t disappear completely, but the fog in my mind began to lift.
Unfortunately, the moment my thoughts became clearer, my mother’s situation returned with
them.
I pushed the thought away. There would be time to think about it. Right now, I needed to start the day.
I finished showering, dried myself, and returned to the bedroom. I went for my workout

clothes, pulling on a clean shirt and a pair of training pants.
Working out was one of the few things that reliably forced my mind into order.

If I didn’t do it, there was a good chance I would spend the entire day feeling beaten down.
I needed movement… Something physical.
I left the bedroom and entered the living area. I expected to find Cole exactly where I had left him and still sleeping. He was there, but he was awake now.
Barely.
He was sitting on the edge of the couch with both hands pressed against his shoulders, massaging them as though he had just returned from a battlefield.
His hair was dishevelled, and his expression suggested that he deeply regretted every decision that had led him to this particular morning.
I stopped and looked at him. For a moment, I simply watched. Then a small smile appeared on my face.
Cole noticed, and his eyes narrowed.
“Don’t,” Cole warned.
I said nothing. Cole continued rubbing his shoulder.
“You look far too pleased with my situation,” Cole said.
I crossed my arms.
“Actually, I am.”
Cole groaned and leaned forward.
“My back hurts like hell.”
I nodded thoughtfully.
“I’m glad to hear that,” I said.
Cole looked up at me.
“You actually enjoy seeing me suffer.”
I shrugged. “What can I say? You deserve it. In fact, you should be feeling twice as miserable as I am,” I said.

He stared at me for a few seconds before muttering something under his breath.
I couldn’t quite make it out, but judging by his expression, I was fairly certain it wasn’t complimentary.
I laughed.

“What are you complaining about? You were the one who brought the beer and decided to sleep off here.”
He continued massaging his shoulders before slowly attempting to stand.
The moment he straightened, his face twisted.
I raised an eyebrow.
“Problem?”
“Nothing.”
He rolled his shoulders cautiously.
“Everything is fine,” he added.
I nodded.
“Good.”
He glared at me, and I ignored him.
