A knock on the car window startled Julian. When he looked up and saw Macie, he quickly unlocked the

door.

But instead of getting into the passenger seat, she hurried into the back, looking visibly flustered.

“What’s wrong? Did something happen?” Julian asked immediately.

“No. It’s nothing…” Macie said, trying to steady her emotions. “Julian, can you start the car? Just drop me off at the next intersection.”

Julian, though puzzled, started the engine. As he turned the corner, he spotted Alice walking into the plaza with a man and woman beside her. He recognized the man as Edward Fowler.

Glancing at the rearview mirror, Julian noticed that Macie wasn’t even seated properly. She was crouched low in the back seat, hiding.

Alice had already come out, so why was Macie acting like she was fleeing? Who was she avoiding?

“Macie, are you hiding from someone?” Julian asked.

“I-”

Macie was about to answer when Julian added, “The only people with Alice were Edward and that

woman. Are you—”

“I’m hiding from the woman,” Macie quickly cut in. “Her name is Sharon Emerson. I know her from high school, and we had a falling out. I don’t want to see her.”

Technically, Macie spoke the truth. Even if Julian asked Alice, the story would hold up.

“I see. For a second, I thought that you were hiding from Edward,” Julian said.

“How could that be? I don’t even know him,” Macie replied, forcing herself to sound composed.

“That makes sense. Even though we went to the same college, we weren’t in the same department. I wasn’t close to him either,” Julian remarked.

Macie relaxed slightly. She hoped never to see Edward again.

Outside the restaurant, Edward rushed to Alice’s car and searched around before muttering in confusion,” She was just here. I saw her.”

Alice, who was leaning against the driver’s seat, rolled her eyes. “Looking for me? I’m right here.”

She clicked her tongue, adding, “The Fowler family is really doomed. Their only heir is out here, wasted and stumbling around like a clueless duck.”

She sighed dramatically. “Oh well. Maybe not entirely doomed. You still have that illegitimate half- brother, don’t you? You had better watch your back. Your inheritance might not be so secure.”

Edward ignored her taunts, still mumbling, “I swear I saw her. Where did she go?”

Alice was about to ask who this woman was, but before she could, Sharon rushed over and linked her arm around Edward for support. “Edward, let’s go home. Don’t run around like this. You might get hurt.”

Alice climbed into her car and buckled in her seatbelt. Just to mess with Sharon, she smirked and said, ” Wow, Edward. Even drunk, you came running to find me. It looks like you’re deeply in love with me.” 2

The thought alone disgusted her, but she felt that it was worth it to rile up Sharon before driving off.

Left standing there, Sharon was livid and jealous. She had just gotten rid of Macie, and now there seemed

to be another rival.

That woman said that her family had planned to marry her to Edward. Sharon wondered what would

happen to her if that were true.

Meanwhile, Edward, still dazed from the alcohol, finally registered Sharon’s words. He nodded slowly and

said, “Yes. Let’s go home. I need to find Macie.”

Sharon’s rage intensified. It was always about Macie. Didn’t Edward say that he didn’t love her?

Yet the moment he got drunk, he distanced himself from Sharon and tried to take back the necklace.

Now, he was chasing after Macie.

Clenching her fists, Sharon let out a bitter laugh. “Of course Edward. Let’s go home to find May.”
