One of the interviewers smiled and said, “Ms. Smith, your professional expertise is outstanding. Your leadership in several team competitions during college makes you an excellent fit for the director position.”

Macie pursed her lips at the remark and glanced at Julian. “I’m sorry, but I don’t think I’m qualified for that. I’d be happy to join the design department as a staff member.”

The interviewers were momentarily surprised by her rejection.

Macie continued, “Thank you for your confidence in me. The competitions during college were team events, and the leader back then was Mr. Atkins, not me. I was just the assistant, so I can’t really take credit for that.

“I’m well aware of my weaknesses. This is my first job, and I have a lot to learn, especially when it comes to leading a team. If I get promoted, I’d like to start from the ground up.”

After hearing her response, the interviewers appreciated her honesty and sincerity. Then, they turned their attention to their boss sitting nearby.

Julian didn’t seem too happy at her response. Before he could say anything, Macie spoke up.

“Julian, did you forget what I told you before? Don’t start me off with such a high position. I know you mean well, but that would just put a lot of pressure on me.”

He sighed when he saw the pleading look in her eyes and said, “Fine. We’ll do it your way, and you can work

your way up.”

She smiled gratefully and continued discussing the details with the interviewers.

When the topic of salary came up, Julian intervened again. He thought that the proposed base salary of 10,000 dollars was too low and insisted her starting salary be 20,000 dollars.

The interviewers naturally didn’t dare say much, but Macie spoke up and requested a lower figure instead.

She had already looked up typical salaries in the field. Since the job market had become increasingly competitive in recent years, 10,000 dollars was the standard starting pay for fresh graduates. She had been out of the workforce for two years, so she figured that was a fair rate.

“Macie, are you here to work or suffer? First, you turned down a director position, and now you want a lower salary?” Julian sighed.

Julian studied her for a moment before finally relenting. Nevertheless, he felt that 10,000 dollars was too low,

so they settled on 15,000 dollars.

Macie officially joined the company. She declined Julian’s offer to personally escort her and instead followed a staff member from the human resource department to the design department.

She joined Design Team Three. When the human resource staff member introduced her, her new colleagues

initially assumed that she was brought in as a team lead and eyed her curiously. But once they realized that she

was just an entry–level employee, they lost interest.
