“Worthless? Ha, that’s right, Edward. Everything is worthless to you,” Macie said as she glared at him. Her whole body trembled as she gritted her teeth to hold back her emotions.

Sharon was the one who had lost Macie’s necklace, yet Edward immediately blamed the latter for being

petty.

Seeing the redness in Macie’s eyes, as if she was on the verge of tears, Edward suddenly froze.

“It’s just a necklace. I’ll buy you another one,” he suggested in a softer tone.

“I don’t care about your compensation! No amount of money can bring back what it meant to me!” Macie bit her lip, then turned away angrily.

“Don’t be ungrateful. I already said that I’d compensate you. What more do you want?” Edward raised his

voice as his patience wore thin.

The only response he got was the sound of a door slamming shut. Edward’s frustration flared. He hadn’t

even had the chance to scold Macie for her attitude these past few days, yet she was now snapping at

him first!

“Ed, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault…” Sharon stepped forward, apologizing. “I was adopted once, but I was

mistreated and had to return to the orphanage. I must have lost the necklace when I moved. It’s my fault for letting May down…”

“It’s not your fault. How much value can that thing from your childhood be? It’s just a cheap plastic trinket.” Edward comforted her, “Macie is just trying to make things difficult for you. She’s been behaving for a few days, but now she’s acting up again.”

“But… May said that it was really important to her,” Sharon murmured guiltily.

Edward scoffed. “What nonsense. She’s just saying that to guilt–trip you. Besides, she gave it to you willingly. It’s not like you stole it. Her losing the necklace is on her.”

Sharon finally felt reassured when she heard this. Meanwhile, Edward, still irritated with Macie, took

Sharon out to dinner.

Macie, who was in the guest bedroom, heard every word of their conversation. Tears welled up in her eyes as she recalled the time she had first arrived at the orphanage.

When no one wanted to play with her, Sharon had been the first to befriend her. Later, she complimented Macie’s necklace, saying that it was beautiful. She had even suggested that, as lifelong friends, she could keep it safe for Macie so she wouldn’t have to see it every day and be reminded of her mother.

Macie had believed her. So, she had handed it over.

Edward was right about one thing. It was Macie’s choice to give it away. This outcome was on her.

Meanwhile, Edward might have been angry, but as he ate at the restaurant, Macie’s tearful face kept surfacing in his mind.

Her red eyes were filled with unshed tears. She looked as if she had suffered the greatest injustice.

Across from him, Sharon asked smilingly, “What are you thinking about, Ed? You’ve been zoning out for a

while now.”

“Macie,” Edward replied. “Isn’t she so dramatic? It was just a cheap trinket, yet she acted like the whole world was against her.”

As he spoke, he didn’t even notice the faint smile tugging at his lips or the relaxed tone in his voice.

However, Sharon noticed it all as she sat across from him.

Her grip on her knife and fork tightened.

“May is… a bit sentimental.” She forced a smile.

“Yeah. She’s not like you. That’s why I’ve decided to buy her a new necklace. That will stop her from bothering you about it again,” Edward announced.

Even though he was technically thinking of her, Sharon had no interest in letting Edward buy Macie anything.

“There’s an auction at eight. Come with me. We’ll see if there’s anything suitable,” Edward added.

Sharon’s eyes nearly popped out of her head at those words. She had assumed that Edward would just buy some cheap necklace worth a few dozen bucks.

But now, he actually wanted to go to an auction!
