Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 5

There was truly no such thing as a free lunch!

Was this really a master bedroom?

It looked like a cheap, tacky honeymoon suite at a sleazy motel!

What was with the aggressively romantic red and pink mood lighting?

And why in God's name was the bed shaped like a giant heart?

The Global Fertility Association was really pulling out all the stops to get people to breed!

While Sloane stood there, mortified enough to melt into the floorboards, a booming, uncontrollable laugh erupted from Logan behind her.

She spun around and glared at him.

And here she thought he was just being a gentleman by giving up the bigger room!

Suppressing his amusement, Logan walked over and flicked a switch on the wall panel. The vulgar pink glow instantly vanished, replaced by standard, crisp white light, making the room look entirely normal again.

So the room actually had standard settings.

Realizing she had completely misjudged him, Sloane felt a flush of embarrassment creep up her neck.

Leaning his massive frame against the doorframe, a teasing smile played on his lips as if he were humoring a flustered child. "After you."

Sloane let out another breath of relief.

The moment she stepped inside, she shut the door firmly behind her.

Downstairs, outside Building 5.

A middle-aged man stared up at the windows of 2101 until the lights finally flicked off.

Pulling out his phone, he quickly made a call.

"Madam, it's done! I watched Logan take his new bride upstairs with my own eyes!"

"Are the lights off?"

"Yes, pitch black."

"Excellent. Give it two years, and I'll finally have my great-grandchild!"

Back at the Lennox estate.

His grandmother hung up the phone, a deeply satisfied smile on her face as she stroked the long-haired cat purring in her lap.

She looked up with a hearty chuckle at the housekeeper bringing her tea. "Thank the heavens for federal mandates. Our Logan finally managed to get himself a wife."

The housekeeper smiled warmly. "Congratulations, Madam. Though honestly, Mr. Lennox never had to worry about finding a wife. If he had just publicly announced he was looking, half the women in Capital City would have lined up to marry him."

"But he refused to look. What happened six months ago was a devastating blow to him. But never mind that. Let's not bring up the past."

The older woman sighed. "Young people today have a million excuses for avoiding marriage, but it all boils down to a lack of faith in the institution itself. Is it really that complicated?"

The housekeeper huffed indignantly. "It's the toxic internet culture from the old days. The constant gender wars, toxic in-laws, the crushing housing market—it made an entire generation terrified of commitment. But things are better now! The Federation provides the housing and pays you to have babies. If we don't start reproducing, we won't even have a society left in a few generations!"

*

Sloane tossed and turned all night, falling into a restless, fragmented sleep.

By seven in the morning, her throat felt like sandpaper, and she desperately needed a glass of water.
