The surgery dragged on until after five in the evening.
Exhausted, Sloane returned to the surgical ward only to find two officers wearing the 'Global Fertility Association' insignia interrogating Dr. Lowe.
The female GFA rep crossed her arms. "Have you and your wife reached a consensus yet? When are you scheduling the egg and sperm retrieval?"
Dr. Lowe scoffed with blatant misogyny. "I couldn't care less. I'll provide my sample whenever you want. But that entitled princess is terrified of a little pain. She claims the retrieval needle is too long and keeps stalling!"
The GFA rep's eyes narrowed dangerously at the insult.
"Dr. Lowe, that is the tenth time I've heard you refer to women as 'entitled princesses.' I don't know if you're aware of this, but women are incredibly resilient. It's simply a matter of whether the man beside them is actually worth the effort.
"You've been married for an entire year, and you haven't made a single attempt to dismantle your toxic prejudices. You never tried to understand your wife. You just slapped a derogatory label on her the moment you met her."
Dr. Lowe looked genuinely baffled. "Am I wrong? She's terrified of hardship and pain."
The rep fired back, "You claim all women are fragile princesses. What about your mother? If she was an entitled princess, who raised you? What about the female charge nurses, the surgical techs, the cleaning staff in this very hospital? Do they shy away from the brutal, exhausting work? I literally just watched a female nurse cleaning up after a bedridden patient down the hall!"
Dr. Lowe stuttered, grasping for an argument. "That's... that's just because the hospital pays them to do it!"
The male GFA rep standing next to her chuckled darkly. "Excellent point, Dr. Lowe. They do that grueling labor because they are compensated for their value. So tell me, what value have you provided to your legal wife?
"You've never treated her like a partner, have you? Your band reminds you daily to bring her breakfast, buy her flowers, or show basic human decency. Have you done that even once? Marriage takes effort and compromise. Your wife might not be your dream girl, but until you fulfill your mandate, could you stop treating her like the enemy? Could you try stepping up and being a decent husband first?"
"I..." Dr. Lowe was completely speechless, unable to form a single counterargument.
