When I Flash-Married a Billionaire, My Ex Went on a Hunger Strike novel Chapter 49

Was it a compensation for betraying their relationship?

The more Louis thought about it, the more it made sense.

How else could Adora, rejected by the Matthews family, suddenly come up with millions to buy a property?

There was no other explanation.

Still on the call, Adora took a few steps away for privacy.

On the other end of the line, Eugene’s voice was soft, almost tentative.

Though he was clearly trying to confront her, there was an undercurrent of caution in his tone.

“Adora, why did you tell Ruby I gave you money? She thinks we’re back together.

“She’s been arguing with me nonstop for days—I’ve tried explaining, but she won’t believe a word I say.”

Adora listened in silence, completely unfazed, not the slightest hint of guilt for the lie.

“She’s the one who accused me of selling myself. Your woman picked the fight. Why shouldn’t you deal with the fallout?”

“What? Selling yourself?”

Eugene sounded confused.

Adora frowned. “She didn’t tell you what happened last night?”

“She said… you stole that ruby necklace, broke it on purpose, and then threw a stack of cash at her to fix it…”

Adora let out a laugh—sharp, breathless, the kind that only came when anger twisted into something colder, almost amused.

“Eugene, are you seriously that blind? What is it about Ruby that you find so irresistible?”

She was a cruel, jealous, and manipulative woman.

A liar who framed others without blinking, slandered with ease, and probably rehearsed every teardrop in the mirror.

With Eugene’s family background and resources, he could have anyone, yet he ended up with Ruby?

He must have had dirt in his eyes.

“Adora…” Eugene murmured, his voice growing more somber.

After a pause, he finally said, sounding almost in pain, “After you were taken… I was devastated. Ruby was the one who stayed by my side, comforting me…”

What?

Her goal was simple: win everyone’s sympathy and erase any suspicion from herself.

And judging by how things turned out, Ruby’s plan had worked brilliantly.

The only misstep was that Adora survived.

“Eugene, you’re such a goddamn idiot,” Adora sneered after laughing herself breathless.

“A complete fool. Honestly, you and Ruby deserve each other. Go ahead, tie the knot and make sure you never ruin anyone else’s life.”

Eugene sounded frustrated now.

“Adora, you’ve always been too biased against Ruby. I grew up with her. I think I know who she really is.”

“You know nothing. But it doesn’t matter anymore. I wish you both all the best. Just promise me one thing—if she ends up behind bars one day, stick with her. Don’t you dare back out.”

She didn’t give him a chance to respond. “I’ve got things to do. I’m hanging up. Don’t call me again. You make me sick.”

“Adora, wait!” Eugene called out in a rush.

“What now?”

“I just… I mean… are you short on money?” he asked, stumbling over the words.
