When I Flash-Married a Billionaire, My Ex Went on a Hunger Strike novel Chapter 48

A wave of emotion hit Adora all at once, and her eyes stung slightly with the heat of it.

Louis was on another call, and when he finally set his phone down, he glanced over and immediately caught the shift in her expression.

He smirked and said, “What’s this? So happy to own a home you’re about to cry?”

Whatever sentiment Adora had been feeling vanished on the spot.

She shot him a sharp glare without hesitation.

Louis raised an eyebrow, feigning curiosity. “Does your family even know you bought this place?”

Adora slipped the property deed into her bag and snapped, “And what does that have to do with you?”

The man simply curved his lips and replied with full confidence, “Well, once Eugene marries your sister, he’ll be your brother-in-law. Technically, that makes me your uncle-in-law.”

In other words, they’d soon be family, and technically, he outranked her in the pecking order.

Adora stared at him, speechless for a second, then let out a dramatic laugh.

“You know, I completely forgot that you do have quite the lofty seniority. No wonder you talk with such a patronizing tone.

“Since you love playing daddy so much, why not just go get married and have a kid? You can play dad full-time.”

Louis swore he’d never met a girl with such a sharp tongue.

She didn’t just speak her mind; she made sure every word stung.

“I’m serious,” he said, his voice cool but measured.

“You should consider seeing a psychologist. After what you’ve been through these past three years, it’s completely understandable if you’ve got some trauma.

“But if you keep lashing out at everyone around you, you’re only pushing happiness further away.”

Coming from a doctor’s perspective, it was a genuine suggestion.

But to Adora, it sounded like he was calling her unstable.

Her expression darkened.

"Then maybe you should see a psychologist. You’ve spent so long surrounded by life and death, you’ve gone numb and become cold and robotic.

“Honestly, what’s the difference between you and a corpse that just happens to be breathing?"

Louis stared at her, his expression unreadable and his jaw tight.

After a pause, he muttered through gritted teeth, “You’re impossible.”

Adora scoffed and gave him a sidelong look. “Stay out of my business.”

The tension between them turned the air sharp and icy.

The agent standing nearby let out a breath of relief—thank God the paperwork was done.

Any longer, and he might’ve lost his commission altogether.

“Um… Miss Matthews,” the agent cut in carefully.

The moment he heard she was on the phone with Eugene, his brow twitched and his eyes narrowing slightly in surprise.

Eugene called her?

Louis had only returned to the country two years ago.

He’d spent years abroad and didn’t know much about his nephew’s personal life.

All he knew was that, by the time he got back, Eugene was dating Ruby.

He’d later heard, in passing, that Eugene had once dated Adora—before she was trafficked and vanished, presumed dead.

The details of those lost years remained unclear, but the aftermath had brought Eugene and Ruby together.

Now Adora had returned alive.

And this tangled web of relationships had just gotten a whole lot messier.

Louis’ initial confusion quickly gave way to suspicion.

His gaze darkened as realization dawned.

Wait a minute…

“Is that where Adora got the money for the house and the car?” he thought.

Did Eugene give it to her?
