Ethan stared at Lacey in sheer disbelief.
This was his biological mother. She would blindly place her absolute faith in outsiders, yet she refused to ever trust her own flesh and blood.
Even across lifetimes, her stupidity was astounding.
No wonder she was almost tortured to death by those parasites in his past life. She deserved it. The only one who had truly suffered was him, spending years taking care of her broken shell.
No wonder Mira had wanted absolutely nothing to do with this toxic family.
"Mom, Fiona made the mistake. She and Dad plotted to pin the blame on me."
"You used to be an executive. You know exactly what happens to a CEO whose reputation is destroyed. Do you have any idea what that would have done to me?"
Ethan's voice was raw with frustration.
But Lacey waved off his logic entirely. "You're younger than her! What's the big deal if you take the fall for Fiona?"
"You're the heir to the Mercer family. Your position is bulletproof; nobody can touch you. But Fiona is different."
"If she gets fired, how is she supposed to survive? No company will hire someone with a black mark on their record."
The sheer absurdity of her argument made Ethan's blood boil. "Mom, who is more important to you? Me, or Fiona?"
Who was her actual child here? Not to mention, Fiona was literally her husband's mistress!
"You're both important! We're all family. Taking the blame for her shouldn't be an issue!"
Ethan ground his teeth together. "What if I told you Fiona is Dad's mistress?"
"Nonsense. I trust them."
The conversation had hit a brick wall.
But she was his mother, so he decided to spell it out one last time.
"Mom, do you know why I was completely unconscious for twenty-four hours? With a severe fever?"
